Where do I start? How about my FO a few weeks ago who picked up the ATIS while on decent into our destination. It gave a altimeter setting of 30.02. SLC Center gave us a decent to 15000 with a desination altimeter setting of 30.01. He proceeded to ask SLC Center which altimeter setting we should use. Center was laughing so hard he was having trouble answering us. I told the FO to please refrain from asking ATC ANY questions without consulting me first.

"Heavy" is to be used on ramp and ground... agree with you in cruise.

Aircraft swap in the middle of the trip, run off the jet to the other gate. Did I mention it's a thirty minute turn? Get to the new gate, fight my way politely down the jetway full of boarding passengers, step into the cockpit whose previous captain KNOWS its a thirty minute turn and I find the seat full down, rudder pedals forward to the stops, armrest adjusters zeroed out full down and the headset unplugged, cord wrapped tightly around the ear pads tied in a knot and stowed in a bin. Thanks for nothing.

"heavy" is to be used on first contact with tower and approach/departure. Dont forget Canada, all the high sector controllers use it. If you use "heavy" while flying in ICN, PVG, HKG etc... then you might be "tool" worthy, everyone is heavy!

Best thread I've read in this forum in a while!
My tool of the day/month story... The captain who was an FFDO who gave me a thorough military style tactical briefing once a day (for the entire month) on what was going to take place if Ahmed the terrorist attempted to breach the cockpit. He used terms like "2 shots, center-mass". It was so ridiculous. I kept thinking "dude, we're flying an RJ, going from ORD-DSM....get real." |

Are you sure that everyone that you fly with in ICN, PVG, and HKG (etc) is heavy?

I nominate Salon Inc. for throwing Patrick Smith and his" Ask The Pilot" column under the bus. Did anyone else follow his writings?
