Pilots on Instagram

During all flight time as defined in 14 CFR 1.1, no flight crewmember may use, nor may any pilot in command permit the use of, a personal wireless communications device (as defined in 49 U.S.C. 44732(d)) or laptop computer while at a flight crewmember duty station unless the purpose is directly related to operation of the aircraft, or for emergency, safety-related, or employment-related communications, in accordance with air carrier procedures approved by the Administrator.
Operators should be aware of the following:
•This prohibition includes any personal use by flight crew members of these devices, including, but not limited to, talking, texting, bidding for schedules, reading or accessing the Internet.
In other words, all personal use is prohibited, whether or not the device is in “airplane mode”

Regardless, the author's hard hitting investigative reporting is little more than attention-grabbing clickbait...and his "naming names" and dropping dimes to airlines and the FAA is beyond the pale.
Pilots need to be smart about everything work-related they put on social media...

Hopefully, it'll result in (at most) a non-disciplinary chat with a Chief Pilot and a memo reminding the pilot group of company GOM/FOM guidance, corporate social media policy, and the importance of discretion.

And there are also dozens of paying passengers sitting behind these pilots, at the very moment these pictures are taken, who are relying them to safely and professionally transport them.

The sterile stuff is way stupid. However good luck trying to prove how the pictures outside of sterile were taken. As long as you don't use a banned PED to take the picture you're OK. Never post anything on FB or any other public site you wouldn't mind the FAA or the company seeing.
