definitely..
I was assuming with those numbers he was going to come out by himself and move the wife and kids after the first year.
which means wife and kids need money to live on too...

it cost about $4000 to ship a PODS full of your stuff from LA to HNL
oh, don't forget the rental car while you wait for your car to get there.
unless of coarse you go the moped route :-)

moving to paradise sounds great til you run the numbers and wake up from the dream

Yes, I would need to move the family after the first year...

A few more Q's as I appreciate the feedback!

I have heard that about 20% of the group are permanent commuters, is this so?

Retirement benefits: Travel? Health? (someone mentioned a one-off 5K into an HSA...that won't cover much :-)

How long is the ground school portion? Is it in same location as interview?

Which A/C initial type necessitate a TDY, thus eliminating the hotel need?

For the 717 guys: This :06 minute landing credit- On a standard, average month, how much does this add to your monthly credit? 10-ish hours? Making the average monthly credit for a year 2 / 717 guy about 85 hours or so?

How far into training would we know our A/C?

Sorry for all the Q's, I am trying to jam a square peg into a financial round hole, trying to see if their is a way to get through.

Additionally, someone raised a good point....how many credit hours would it be per month in ground school? Not sure the computation on that. Could help.

When HAL can no longer attract people due to first year pay, or when enough people leave during first year to a mainland major, that's when things will change.

This first year pay is about what the State of Hawaii pays for unemployment.

Possibly more than 20%. If you are on resv you can arrange 12 days off consecutively.

you can still non rev if you retire. Assuming the TA passes you would be correct on the one time $5000 into the HRA.

Ground school is in the same place as the interview. Length varies pretty typical time frame. Only Airbus guys stay in base throughout training.

Not sure what this 6 minute landing credit for 717 you are referring to is?

You find out your plane on the first day.

You only spend $25 a month on beer? What's wrong with you?

Thanks 808! Any 717 guys care to chime in on the monthly credit with the 6 min credit? 85 hours a normal month? RSV?

Almost makes me glad I am not yet competitive. I'll keep making a living, and building time, and maybe when I am, HAL will have to come around. I've spent a great deal of time out there, and would love to be based there, but I like to eat, too. I have no spouse or kids, and I don't see how anyone with them can manage it, even for a year!

And how do you say no if another major calls first with reasonable first year pay and livable bases?

I guess I'll worry about that when my phone starts ringing
