Great Lakes Airlines Hiring!
#21
AtlCSIP,
I just posted the info on Facebook, so far no takers! And I encourage others to do the same.
Non-pilot friends were surprised to say the least--especially when shown that a career in fast food pays more than their co-pilot earns.
I do like your idea too.

Actually, the solution here is for everyone to apply. Then, during the interview, explain that you would be happy to fly for Great Lakes at a different pay rate, whatever that rate might be. If everyone turns them down (which won't really happen) they will be forced to pay their new hires better.
What do you think about that strategy?
By the way, I know a few former Lakes guys. I think the flying would be a blast, but can't stomach the pay. 4 days in the Navajo pays more than a month at Lakes!

I've been out of a job for OVER a year now. No, I did not apply at Lakes, because I do make more on Unemployment and I can get by on that right now paying my bills and putting food in my mouth, but some people might be struggling or do not receive unemployment for whatever reason. Lakes is a crappy place, but it's a paying job.
You said you are sick of seeing unjust pay scales accepted as the norm in this industry. But I see a you applied at Colgan. Do you believe Colgan is that much better than Lakes? Flying around a 70 some seat Turboprop for $19k/year? So, why did you apply? Probably because you need a job, or live close to one of their bases, keep flying because that is all you know how to do, or it might pay slightly more than unemployment. Whatever the reason might be. I'm sure the people applying to Lakes, or the furloughed United or Frontier guys flying there have their own reasons.
Again, everyone has to do and SHOULD do their own research and only they can make the decision.
And I am willing to bet, as soon as Colgan or whatever the next airline might be to start actively interviewing and hiring, you will be see the same BS posted on here. People telling people not to apply there, because of the low pay, because of the QOL, because of the equipment they fly, etc.

In my opinion (as bad as this sounds) Lakes is one of the only true regionals out there (minus the pay). A regional used to be the place to build up time, move to the left seat within a year get your PIC then go on to the majors, or cargo, etc...This has all changed dramatically since the appearance of the Regional Jet.
What is happening now is that regional airlines (like the big ones) are getting so big with bigger REGIONAL jets that pilots that make captain are finding themselves comfortable there with the pay, lifestyle, seniority whatever. This has created a backlog in pilots moving up to the majors in the past decade or so (especially in a bad economy), The Majors want to contract out to regionals because its cheaper, the mgmt at both regionals and majors benefit from this greatly but not the pilots. Lets ask yourself this question...if given a spot at lets say Republic right now and your a 5 year captain...you got fairly good seniority, flying a nice jet, and the pay is not the best, but not bad, would you want to go to DAL, or COA, or UAL just to get put back on reserve? I think most of the pilots in those positions would want to say at that regional (hence no insentive to move on). What it really comes down to is regionals are getting to big, with longer routes, bigger planes, and not appropriately raising the pay for doing so, there has to be a point when enough is enough.
Like said already its something the individual has to determine what is right for him/her to go to lakes or not. Its all about the variables and what is going on in that persons life, I personally do not like to bash anyone for going anywhere because they have their reasons, I have mine.
Also I think everyone is in the same boat when it comes to pilot pay, its not focused on one airline alone, ALL are to blame and the only ones to fix it are us the pilots, end of story.

luv2rotate,
How many hours do you have?
I applied online last week and have not gotten a response...I have 5 people I know that work as pilots and could walk my resume in. I just don't know if it's financially possible to be hired move out and not get paid during training, and then when hired make $15/hr. I guess I could try food stamps...

Could I suggest everyone reconsider flying for lakes and seriously consider flying somewhere you get paid?
If you want to fly around in a small plane in bad weather amongst awesome scenery just go to Alaska, you'll have more fun and make a years income from lakes in 2.5 months tops (and no reserve).
