What Rocket Man says is right. The 757 flies to the smaller cities unless it's flying through the Rockford, IL hub or other similar smaller hubs (DFW, CAE, PHL, etc.).
The A300, a.k.a. Croissant Cruiser, is the new domestic route goddess and has taken over many former 757 routes that have been outgrown. The 767 is the backbone of UPS's international trans-Atlantic routes, the MD-11 is the international trunk lanes aircraft, and the 757 is the S. and Latin America and smaller-town America airplane. The 757 also flies intra-Europe and intra-Asia, but the A300 is likely to take this flying over in the next 5 years.
The 727's flying has eroded over the past several years, but has leveled off with the good volumes and will gain some Menlo lift once its absorbed by January 06.
The 747 is only around because we need the lift. The airplane is a maintenance hog and breaks often.
One MD-11 is out on vacation for a few months due to an accident in SDF last month, so our system is even tighter.
New hires are being added as quickly as the training center can pump them through, and most are now going to the first officer seat.
Cheers.

ONT is not necessarily senior. The top guys usually bid reserve so that they don't do much. It is a mix of dom and int. In fact, about 4 new hires just went to ONT. Like MIA, ONT will typically have some vacancies whenever there is a bid for upgrades.

Just tagging on to Brown Cow's post....
There is very little movement on the seniority list in ONT. Many FO's are bypassing Capt bids on other fleets in SDF hoping to get Capt in ONT. It's a great domicile -- very little adult supervision compared to SDF.
