Why would they be furloughing, they aren’t losing any aircraft according to the company’s information.

The reductions are at Alaska Airlines inc. 4-500 pilots and 1800 to 2300 flight attendants starting this fall. The estimates are for a full 3 years for 50% of the furloughs. It is likely that Horizon Air will be hiring pilots and flight attendants next year. At times like this Horizon Air pilots/FA’s can be grateful that there is no “Flow” to/from Alaska Airlines.

I hate to be the one to spoil the vibes of a "positive" news thread, and I sincerely hope that NO ONE at Horizon is furloughed. But, the reality is that our flying is still off by about 85%, and the company expects demand to stay depressed for at least another year. This isn't good for either Alaska or Horizon.

The company president at Horizon sent out a long message this week. The take-away message seems to be:

(1) We don't know what demand is going to be like during the 4th quarter of 2020.

(2) We would "like" to bring back most of our parked planes.

(3) Further schedule reductions may be required as we move into the winter months (typically a low-demand time).

I've worked as a regional pilot for twenty years (and two furloughs). It's "Hope for the best, plan for the worst". It's encouraging that bookings are back up. Also, I think we can use the E175 or the Q to efficiently operate some routes that would not be economical to run a 737 on, given the current demand.

i think both horizon and Alaska should have the same goal of getting Skywest off property. I too believe that horizon will likely furlough fewer pilots than Alaska but I doubt the number will be 0. I guess we will hear more in July.

Let's not kid ourselves. We have no power to make Skywest go away. They are here for at least 8 now years

From a couple of conversations I've had recently, IBT is cautiously optimistic that Horizon might avoid furloughs, since their math says that we won't quite hit the amount of overstaffing required, and if we did, it probably wouldn't be for long enough for the furlough to make economic sense.

I also talked with someone in management (so take this with a ton of salt), who thinks Horizon is in decent shape moving forward. As of now, the plan is for all our parked airplanes to be back on the line by the end of June, with more flying being added in July and August. They did say that Skywest would probably have flying removed proportionally if we furloughed, but made it clear AAG would never get rid of Skywest entirely.

Come September, no one in management or the union has any clue exactly what the industry might look like and how bad the fall slowdown will be, so there's still a lot of unknowns, but I'm getting the impression that junior Horizon folks are probably in a better position than junior Alaska people come October 1.

The rest of 2020 is NOT looking that great..., but if you want to work here, then go ahead and apply. This is one of those cases where "you can't win if you don't play". The only thing it will cost you is some time and effort.
