Got this email today.... Bummer!

"Hopefully by now you have heard from Jenni Wilson, the Chief Pilot's assistant, and know that all scheduled pilot interviews have been cancelled. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Due to economics, Horizon has re-evaluated their fleet type and decided to transition to a signle-type fleet of fule-efficient Q400 aircraft. With this change, Horizon no longer has a need for hiring of pilots at this time.

In the future when Horizon is again hiring pilots, please reapply at http://jobs.horizonair.com .

Thank you for your interest in Horizon Air and best of luck in your job search.

My list of possible employers is getting slimmer....

I think it sucks for the CRJ drivers but I doubt it is going to get ugly. Slow for a year or so, probably. The sky over Seattle and Portland is still there, its not falling.

Explain how it's going to get ugly?? They have and are transitioning to the airplane everyone SHOULD be flying with the way things are at this point. Plus their route structure doesnt need jets ...

current number of airplanes after Q200 transitioned out= 69
Current number of CRJ's to disappear= 21
Total airplanes= 48

Basicly 1/3 0r 220 pilots need to find a home. And where to the cut from? Not the top but the bottom.

We had our largest year of attrition last year with the age 60 rule in place and many majors hiring how many left? I believe it was around 68.

DO the simple math. If they dont get more airplanes 8 year captains will be FO's again. Ive flown with 3 8+ years captains on this trip already and they are all sweating it.

Also add to the theory of a third party carrier coming in and you have UGLY!!

Well, let's see. The most senior guys will lose their seats in the CRJ at 121/hr to fly the -400 at 77/hr. and 1/3 of the pilots will get laid off.

Now do you see how it is going to get ugly? Horizon and Alaska are both negotiating new contracts. I foresee a huge strike/lockout in the near future. Seattle is going to be a killing field.

18 year pay on the Q400 is around 111/hr, not 77/hr. Basically take the captain CRJ pay and cut around 10 bucks an hour off to estimate the Q400 rates.

It's still going to be ugly though. As you said, a substantial number of pilots could find themselves furloughed.
