P.S. Also, I came in from flying heavies. People hyped up the “deadly” Q400, but I found that if you study, chair fly, clear out ALL distractions (people in my life tried causing drama during upgrade, and were promptly ditched,) you’ll be fine. Ask questions, know your stuff, and you’ll be fine. Just like college....

....wait, I flunked out of college...
Preach! exactly your head down during training and you’ll be fine. You get out what you put in

Yeah so I looked at the bid awards and it looks they just made less lines to me. So they kept the reserves at 4 or 5 with some junior assigned airport, and I don't know what they did with the rest of the flying. At a little over two years the lines went below me.

But, they must have looked at their numbers and decided it was adequate because they aren't doing anything more than asking nicely to get q captains. I'm sure if they were very short they would offer some incentive in the pathway program at least.

So basically it is possible that climb to vnav is on airport reserve again in October, because they just didn't make them a line. Even though they could have.

I also forgot to mention that the plane itself isn't THAT bad...our ridiculous SOP and FOM is what makes it challenging.

Zackly. It has personality, is all. And jet-like speed. The company, on the other hand...

Yeah. If you look the pairing chart thingy for PDX Q400, you’ll see that there was enough open time left over to divvy out a couple more lines. That being said, the company’s contractually obligated to have a pool of reserves, and I think that’s where I and a handful of other dudes keep drowning.

If the company had its way, then 100% of our pilots would be on reserve. Horizon has always been able to hold back some trips for management flying and training, but they've also abused this privilege. In July 2017 (when we first went to PBS) we had over 300 trips in open time on the captain side. I calculated that if every Q400 captain picked up three or four days of flying, we could ALMOST cover the schedule.

When Horizon runs out of reserves, they start waving money at line holders to pick up open time. This gets old after a few years. Why not just hire and upgrade some additional pilots? (Answer: That apparently costs more money than offering premium pay.)

If you're a Q400 captain on reserve, good luck! November is looking like another busy month.

They'd be ok if they weren't so gun-shy about the airport reservists. They'll wanna add two more legs to a short-call guy with four legs already, meanwhile I'm sitting on the couch bothering the FAs- *cough* eh, I mean, reading the FOM

...can someone tell the Air Force that I'm trying to sleep here?

I hear you there. It really used to annoy me when I got extended for a relaxing, 14-hour, 8-leg day... then I find out that there's some reserve pilot at home or at the airport who is not getting used. Crew Scheduling would prefer to extend someone who's already at work than call in an (unused) reserve pilot.
