While it may be inadvisable, I know plenty of people who commute in during their RAP on occasion and change their voicemail to something like “if this is Crew Services and you have an assignment for me today, consider me notified. I’m on flight 123 and I land at 11am.” You could get burned because you’re supposed to be contactable and you’re not, but common sense and common practice seem to indicate that if you land before your earliest possible report, no big deal. Of course you’re rolling the dice since your flight could divert of get delayed. To look at it another way, what about long call? You’re still supposed to respond within 15 minutes I believe. But what if you want to commute to base during your LCR RAP? I can’t imagine anyone would have a problem with that, yet you would still technically be violating the FSM/CBA.

Quick question guys while we are on the topic-
Can I commute in during the call out window? For example if I start RSV at 10am (12:30 earliest show) and I arrive in JFK at 11am (of course keeping CS in the loop) is that acceptable or do we need to be in domicile before RSV starts? If that is acceptable, is LGA a valid option for this technique of commuting? |

I’ve done it 1000 times. Tell CS the flight you are on and to just assign you a trip if it comes up and you will be in position. They can always use the acars if it’s a company flight or email you. Either way, if you get a trip when you arrive and give them a hard time, you’re not doing yourself or others any favors.
None of this is positive contact. I follow one book and one book only the CBA. When it helps me and what it does not....... |

Let’s just get the merger over with already with a Legacy and improve reserve overnight. A little bit of ready reserve, or maybe the opportunity to wait for an assignment during a 12 hr RAP instead of 10 hrs. Or even the ability to operate a flight up to 16 hours after you started reserve. What’s the formula again? Table B + 4 hours? AA is 12 days off in a 30 day month... we know Jetblue pilots like to work more.

There are sections in Section 25.R and the entire CBA that need improvement, of course. Some think we should just start all over with a blank piece of paper for TA2...I think that’s being disingenuous, just my opinion. Some with think otherwise.

The CBA actually does address reserve pilots commuting in during reserve: 18.A.5: “a. Crew Services shall leave the Pilot’s Reserve Availability Period (RAP) unchanged if the Pilot will arrive at the airport within three (3) hours of the start of his original RAP. Upon arrival, the Pilot shall contact Crew Services and if there is an assignment for him at that time the Reserve call out period shall not apply. If the Pilot arrives more than three (3) hours after the start of his original RAP, Crew Services will either: i. Assign the Pilot a new RAP. Crew Services shall not assign a Pilot a RAP, without his consent, touching the Red Eye Period unless the Pilot was originally scheduled for duty in the Red Eye Period; or ii. release the Pilot for the entire RAP. A Pilot who is released will have the option to use his PTO to receive pay for the value of the Reserve Day. b. Nothing herein shall prevent Crew Services and the Pilot from mutually agreeing on another assignment (pay will be in accordance with Section 3 – Compensation)” Now, this is the “commuter policy” section and not meant to be a normal way of commuting in, but there at least is a provision in the CBA in case you’re not able to make it in by the start of your RAP.
