$50? That's cute.
So 8 minutes of pay for canceling your hotel while giving up hours of credit you otherwise would have been entitled to. With the added bonus of not being covered by the fatigue system because you decided to go home for 12 hours instead of the company-provided hotel.
$50 might be a lot for a Spirit pilot but not on our side of the fence.

The buyback can be used in any hotel on the buyback list in any city. So if you commute from PHL and bid pairings with Philly overnights where your wife is going to pick you up from the airport anyway, you can drop the hotel and pocket another $50. Your credit time for the trip is unchanged, your rest is unchanged, you just get paid for a room you never planned to use anyway.

Yeah, no. That’s not the reason the hotel buyback is used here.

Are all of you rough around the edges like this or just the vocal minority on the internet forums? Hard to negotiate for a contract on par with the legacies when you have the maturity and composure of a regional pilot. Might explain a lot, now that I think about it.

I think you missed my point or we talked past each other. The company uses in base layovers in order to reduce total credit. I didn't suggest canceling the hotel reduces credit. Instead of a turn paying 9 hours, they tack on 2-3 more days at 3-4 hours a day to make a min-credit trip. The pocket change hotel cancel buyback doesn't make up for the credit lost by this arrangement.

Maybe that happens over at big blue, but we don’t have those type of in base layover trips here at po’ old cut-rate Spirit. In base layovers are practically non-existent, usually resulting from a cancellation or reschedule and the company is obligated to get you a hotel even in base, which is an advantage to those who commute/long drive. The buyback in these situations is irrelevant as it would be too late to apply for the refund. So before casting that discount pilot judgement maybe send an email to your scheduling reps.
