For me Kalitta is the perfect job. Great airplane, great crews, good overnights. I am an exception to most pilots though. I am older and don't have kids at home to worry about, am not married and don't have a wife to deal with, and I have a few bucks in the bank.
For those thinking of coming here be aware of several things:
1. 17 days is 17 days. It can get long at times
2. We have been without a contract for many years and there is really no realistic end to that issue in sight
3. We are a private company with a single owner. He is not in the greatest of health. In my opinion he is a master at his craft and is the single biggest reason for his own success. That being said, I don't know what will happen if he suddenly passes.
4. For those thinking.....I will just go there and get some heavy time and have a good time on the road? Great plan if you get through training. There are a few "difficult" instructors that have a huge failure rate. If you plan a long career in aviation and think you might have any issues at all with training, don't risk it. Recent training failures are not good on the resume. We have had a few guys recently come here with the intention of doing just that. Most have passed and some have failed.
5. You are on probation for 1 year. The company will pretty much fire you without cause if you mess up. My opinion only but they have been burned by a cast of characters in the past who have exhibited bad behavior in the beginning of their time here. Those people later became night mares for the company. Company has over reacted and let some good people go for minor infractions lately. Again only my opinion.
6. "If" and I don't see it happening anytime soon, the company settles the contract and "fixes" the bad eggs in the training department, then this could be a destination airline and most of their problems would be solved. I am hearing that they want to put 10 400's on over the next year. Can't see them getting crews to fly them if things don't change. Most of the 400's would be to replace classics with a small net gain in airframes. Problem for the company is that 400's don't have engineers and use an extra FO most of the time. SO we need less engineers which we already have and need more FO's which we don't have.

Surprisingly, I have never been there. I have wanted to go but only with someone who just wants to go and check it out. Everybody that goes over there never seems to come back until the next day. Of course there was that one exception of the pilot who woke up back in his room. He found out later that the Police had picked him up in Kowloon completely roofied. They quickly figured out what had happened to him and took him back to his hotel where the staff put him to bed. Don't see the cops in the US doing that!

I wonder what happened to him between the time of being roofied and being picked up by the popo.
Good times...I never went there either...I actually care about and respect my wife. Always fun seeing the guys stumble into breakfast though.

If you want that adventure, jumpseat on United or Delta. Not worth a 121 training failure.

What's up with this talk of training failures? I've worked for my share supplemental carries, some of the most infamous, but I don't recall any trouble with excessive training failures. They happen, but in fact I think there rare. A B747, classic or glass is a pretty straight forward big jet to check out, can't imagine any justification for busting guys for the hell of it. What company would put up with that from their training staff. What a waist of time and money. I don't work at Kalitta so maybe I don't get it, and I'm not saying you guys are wrong. It just sounds ridicules.
