Default To Those that left 121...

Outside obvious things like losing medical certificates or terminations, I'd like to understand some of the reasons people left the career. Was it career instability? Domicile instability? Lifestyle?

Thanks in advance.

cornerpocket, your inquiry may be a bit broad. 121 is not a one-size fits all. Is it 121 all-cargo? 121 regional? 121 major? 121 LCC? Which are you actually seeking information from, as the answers may vary widely based on the segment of 121.

Hi Peabody - That's a fair point. Yes, 121 is fairly expansive so I left it open ended to gather input from anybody who left any of those segments. Truthfully, after posting it I came to the realization that people who left the industry probably don't spend their time on this forum

I have left 121 several times. I didn't leave the career, unless by "leaving the career," you restrict it to 121. A career in aviation covers more than 121 flying, and there are a lot of other things to do in aviation than fly 121. I have made the change for various reasons, but in my opinion, the change was for the better.

I'm sure everyone has their own reasons. Life changes and circumstance often dictate what's best for any one of us, and that "best" may evolve with time and need. What was "best" yesterday is not necessarily so, today.

I left regional 121 mostly because of the work rules regarding schedule, junior manning, commuting rules, and crew support. Pay wasn’t really an issue. Schedule was a relatively minor contributor. YMMV.

I would return to a major or LCC if the right opportunity was present.

I mean, depending on your flight times. Pretty much everyone is hiring.

I was furloughed from 121 in 2003, did the flow down to regional purgatory for 2 years then found out about Fractional Private Jet flying. Got on with NetJets and never went back to 121, even declining recall to a major. I love the type of flying vs 121 and generally it's more secure than 121 however the 2007-8 recession was an exception to that. I stayed with it until I lost my medical in 2017.
