By virtue of the OPM job classification of an FG-1825 ASI, flight checks in actual aircraft is part of the generic job description. Any ASI (GA or ACO) doing flight checks in actual aircraft requires a 2nd class medical. Granted not all ACO positions involve flight checks in actual aircraft, BUT to get “in the door” from the outside, it is my understanding after being here for over a decade is that entry level ACO ASI positions are “generic” FG-1825 positions at the 9/11/12 grade and you must meet all the generic hiring requirements, including medical ceritification. If anyone lurking here has been recently hired “off the street” without a medical, please chime in! I have personally never in my career heard of anyone getting hired off the street as an ACO ASI without holding a 2nd class medical.

NECK, if ur interested, you should not hesitate to apply and please let us know what happens!
As an aside, Some time ago, the Agency hired some “J” Bands (HQ) positions right off the street. Those positions did not require medicals. However, the Agency realized that by hiring some HQ folks that did not have previous FSDO or CMO experience, it was challenging. Most HQ folks write policy. It is difficult to write policy with no previous field experience... So... Not sure if you will see those types of openings in the near future..

Had my RW ASI checkride cancelled one day after the government shutdown. :/
I called and was told that I'd have to wait as FAA employees have priority over me for rides. Totally get it. I would hope to take and pass the ride before the government is set to close AGAIN on 15 FEB.
These shutdowns makes me have second thoughts about working for the Feds.

^^Hang in there Gonzo! As one who just endured their 4th furlough in the past 6 years, I understand. Be patient and then decide once you get the CJO. For additional perspective,
any place in the aviation industry could have furloughs as well. Just ask anyone when was junior during 2001-2008. There are no 100% stable jobs whatsoever in aviation.

If these truly scare you I would honestly recommend another profession.
