Thanks, this helps. I wasn't sure if they were going to start asking about "strengths, weaknesses, tell me a time when..." etc. Sounds like they do that during the in-person interview.
Also, any idea if there is a "list" of what FSDO's are looking for ASI's?
Cheers all.

I’m at the academy today and it seems all offices are short. I know Harrisburg, PA, Des Moines, IA, and Scottsdale, AZ are short-staffed.

Just finished reading this entire thread and I have a couple of questions. The application says 75% travel for the GA side but a lot of people have mentioned being home every night, can someone please explain how much you are away from home? When you do your string training in OKC, are you required to pay for your own lodging?

No, you are given a per diem, which covers long-term lodging, and meals.
I run about 30-50 nights a year, including time at the academy for continuing classes. A lot of that is due to surveillance at a 141 school I have.

A lot of acronyms, terms and abbreviations used here that many I bet aren't familiar with. A Google search has helped a bit but not completely. Thanks for all the info shared for those of us interested in this job.

Several months of your life that you’ll never get back.
I kid, I kid. Sort of. The training consists of several “strings” of classes that are a combination of web-based and instructor led training. The instructor led portion is conducted in Oklahoma City, so you’ll make 3-4 trips to OKC during your first year, with each trip lasting 3-6 weeks. It’s pretty solid quality training, but OKC is not exactly a place I’d ever spend long periods of time by choice.

Yup, “string” is good though, 3.2 beer and lotsa “happy hour” meals with your classmates. OKC is definitely not a garden spot (particularly during tornado season or winter ice storms) but you can plan on visiting OKC at least 3X per year for the duration of your ASI career! “String” = Indoc or “death by powerpoint”, LOL
Pity the class that has the instructor read each and every slide out loud. The good news is every 50 minutes, you get a 10 minute break!

Greetings All:
I'm a recent ASI-RW applicant. Hoping for a call here in a few weeks.
Questions for the ASI's out there. What other opportunities are there within the FSDO's and or regions one may work? Of course this being after you spend some time as an ASI.
Thanks Again

Lots of options after some experince with certificate managment (POI) particularly if you have both F/W and R/W quals. Like writing policy (Orders, Notices, InFOs, SaFOs and Advisory Circulars)? There’s a job for that. Do you have a Copter TERPS background? There’s a job for that too. Do you like to manage people? How about instructing at the Academy? Point is, ASI is just the beginning. Google “FS 1100.1” to wet your appetite.

Perfinit:
Thanks for info. I'll be sure to Google that.
I'm dual rated as well. Should I except to work both sides of the house (RW & FW) as a POI?
Would having a Masters (ie MBA) make me more marketable if I was interested in management later on?
Thanks
