Flight Deck Luggage Room
#1
throughout my aviation career, I have avoided commuting, but that is no longer the case. As a result, I am completely ignorant of what the jumpseat is like on most aircraft. As a jumpseater, I am usually the last one on and therefore all the overhead bins are taken. I know that I could always ask the crew if there is room in the flight deck or closet for my bag, but seeing as I get on right as the door is about to close, I really don't want to add to the confusion with a last minute checked bag.
For those familiar with this, I think it would be good to get a database on what aircraft can accept bags for a jumpseater.

On the 190 (and 170/175) you can lay a roller bag flat on the floor under the jumpseat when it's folded down. It takes a little maneuvering (if your good at twister or yoga it's a bonus) but you can do it.
Note: Some companies or captains may not allow bags stowed in non stowage places. I always ask my FO if he's ok with laying a JSers bag flat before I allow it on the 190. Same issues may apply to smaller bags in the cubby hole behind the CA or FO's shoulder due to possible interference with opening the window/escape hatch.
Personally I don't mind as long as everyone is aware that a bag may need to be moved in order to get out.

I always have Jumpseaters preboard provided they are already at the gate.
If seats are available: stow the bag and have a seat
If it's only the Jumpseat: stow the bag and have a seat
If we aren't sure: preboard anyway and stow your bad and have a seat in the cockpit. When the agent comes to close you can either move back if seats are available or stay in the cockpit.
If for some reason another jumoseater arrives that would ultimately bump you off the aircraft with his priority I'm sure you will graciously grab your bag and give him your seat.
I mean how hard is it just to tell the agent the junpseater is coming down?
