You mean the place where threads go to die? It's the boneyard of internet forums.

My jumpseat story:

This was the on very day that the America West pilots both won, and lost, their appeal for the merged list binding (or was it?) arbitration.

Came running down the jet bridge and was the last to board on a tight connection. Went to the cockpit, introduced myself, and asked for a ride.

Captain: "America West or US Air"?

Uh, what?

Captain: "Who's in the right? America West or US Air?"

Gave a neutral answer.

Captain didn't like that, AT ALL. He rolled his eyes and waved the jet bridge back.

So I made a guess based on the destination, said loudly and proudly without having a clue what I was talking about "America West pilots were screwed!!"

Ding ding ding! Right answer, jet bridge waved off, and I got to listen to 3+ hours of the ins and outs of a contract/merger fight that I didn't know anything about.

To this day, I wonder what would've happened if if I'd chosen the US Air option.

Honestly I haven't been paying attention, but you can fill me in enroute.

I actually said that once, under similar circumstances

Few years ago. Comes into the cockpit, ask for the jump, and within seconds proceeds to inform me of the ins and outs of how he got furloughed 3 times before he got screwed with the USAir/Awest merger. Was somewhat tempted to ask him if the second furlough wasn't enough of aa hint, but thought better of it.

Not an actual story while riding the jumpseat but….

Flight I needed to catch to get back to training was full, so I ask for the jumpseat. There was another passenger on standby who was furious with this poor gate agent. She hears me ask the gate agent for the jump and get it. She asks what that is and I explain.

Go down and ask captain, he says yes I get on. Gate agent comes to grab the paperwork and told me that the standby passenger got ****ed at her because she let an “employee on over a paying customer instead” and that passengers should have access to the cockpit and FA jumpseats if the flight is full.

I cannot believe there are people like this out there.

Most passengers know nothing about what a jumpseat is or the FAA rules that govern it. All that passenger knew was that the airline sold them a ticket and they weren’t allowed to board and you were. Was their reaction reasonable? No. Was it understandable? Sure.

I’m always very appreciative when the crew has found a way to squeeze me in on a full flight (thanks Alaska crews!). I’m also reminded how lucky I am to not have to deal with pax who are completely ignorant of how their transportation system works.

I would not believe this if it hadn't happened to me too. The DL gate agent shut Karen down pretty quickly though, something about calling police if she insisted on cockpit access.
