You should try to serve.... we need thinking, rational, and logical people in juries. You might be able to ensure someone sees the justice they deserve, or not get punished when they don't deserve it. Juries are the second to last resort for citizens in this Republic.

Such idealism. Then you learn it's yet another scumbag burglar who unfortunately wasn't shot on sight. Enjoy listening to the defense attorney talk about reasonable doubt like it's a 400 level concept and other fun things during your two to three days of process for an obvious guilty verdict that should have taken ten minutes.
It's also about keeping the government in line.
When the government screws up, murderers and rapists and thieves go free. Therefore when the government violates the rights of the accused, they have to be let go. This drops the cops' and prosecutors' conviction rates and causes a feedback loop so that they don't make the same mistakes in the future and justice is better served.

I have actually served on a federal jury once... and there was a FA on the jury too. A couple of nannies, a social worker, a parts salesmen, too, etc. They only chose me because I was the last one left. And I was the oldest whitest guy in the room... at the age of 38.
That should tell you something.

If you ever understood the justice systems in some other countries, it would help you appreciate the imperfect jury system.
Some countries you are assumed guilty. You have to prove you are innocent. The prosecution does not have to put on evidence of your guilty.
Some countries the judge makes the decision. Real easy to bribe the judge. Harder to bribe 12 random citizens pulled for a jury.
Some countries the prosecutor or police make the decision. We accuse you, convict you, sentence you. Some cases are on the spot.
A jury trial was a novel idea when written in our constitution.

You are welcome. Glad to help some people understand the jury system, even if it does not you. I will leave it to others to answer your (mostly) rhetorical question. Good day.
And yes, I have served on several juries and observed some of the same things you have observed.
