Nobody can reliably predict what will happen much beyond a year in this industry. Think of it this way- we do not even reach the peak of the pilot attrition problem for another 3 years. Then, its 5 more years of what we have today. Its likely small airlines will fold or consolidate or both. Avelo, Breeze, Allegiant, Frontier and to some degree even Southwest are in for a rough ride.
Avelo: used cheaper 73’s, experienced management, steady scalable, flexible growth, little to no overhead, several aviation savvy investors.
The likelihood of Avelo shutting down is small. Reason? The cost to operate. They measure their growth, pull out immediately after a city doesn’t provide the results they expect. With a recession glooming, business travel in a sharp decline after the pandemic, point to point business model and it’s scalable growth, the best place to be is a ULCC (Avelo/Breeze). Avelo has small pilot classes, unlike Southwest, AA or UA where some of those plan to hire hundreds of pilots each year. They are hurting, not to mention their enormous cost to operate(new airplanes, high payscales, Hub operations, etc). I rather be in the top 100 pilots at Avelo than number 19876 at a Legacy when our economy takes its next dump.

I’d stay away from either as they are both a mess and the risk outweighs the reward.
Breeze is growing way too fast for it’s resources and can’t seem to get it’s act together. The working conditions are getting worse and it’s burning cash at an alarming rate. It is having to seek new investment to stay afloat and quite frankly, poeple are steering clear now. The benefit package isn’t that good and is expensive.
Avelo doesn’t seem to have a real robust plan. It started on the West Coast, moved to the East and seems to be floundering a bit. Management seems to be a big issue and the group looks dissuaded. You need strong morale to be succesful but the internal strife is damming. Lots of issues and no real direction it appears.
Today, the market is different. The majors are finally having to pay real market wages. Will it last? The LCCs, and what I call the new hybrid LCCs, are struggling and will continue to do so because of market forces. At this juncture you’re better off at a regional, get the bonus and move on to the majors.
These are observations and career advice based on experience but it could all change tomorrow. One must be ready because this business is not for the faint of heart.
Good luck.

At least at Breeze, you can’t be disciplined for minor issues or have racial comments by management.

3 different plans. Not cheap (somewhere between $150-self to $600-Family per paycheck???) if you add spouse, or spouse and kids. As the company grows, insurance companies offer better plans. Health, vision, dental with United and they start on the first day of the month following your class date.

Not sure about Avelo but at Breeze they told us they’re profitable now in all markets they’ve been at 6 months or longer. They also said company should be profitable this year and definitely by next year. New pay raise coming next month. Money is finally start to come in this quarter compared to the operational difficulty they had mid last year with a bunch of A220 pilots on Captain pay sitting around with no planes to fly. Breeze is already twice as big as Aveo by now? All with brand new employees. If you want everything operating without a hitch and predictability then startups are not for you. Something to think about.
