I think you’re mixing deadheading and commuting. DH is a paid day of work at Delta and FDX. Commuting is just getting to work. Delta offers positive space commuting which is a guaranteed seat but no pay. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is very similar to booking an FDX jumpseat to Memphis. It’s a reserved seat but you aren’t paid.

Huge mistake if FedEx decides not to hire you. I would also keep in mind that we are 1 accident away from ending commuting as we know it today.

I assume you did not follow events after the Colgan accident. We came very close to having commuting count toward rest and duty requirements. ALPA beat that off last time. If we have another accident where poor commuting choices are a factor they won’t win that issue again.

but pilots have long embraced doublespeak in matters of scheduling and fatigue. We don’t actually want real improvement in such matters

That is the smart choice with the high volume of current hiring. Nothing prevents you from leaving for FedEx from Delta or United. Delta is also adding a SLC training facility. Not having to go to ATL is a plus.
