Dal, Ual, Fdx. Small town commuter
#52
1. took his wife's car in to the shop
2. ran to see his kid play t-ball
3. after coming home, mowed the lawn because he's about to leave on a 10 day trip and it needs to get done
4. has dinner with the family
5. helps the kids with homework
6. rushed to pack his bag because it's not done yet and he has to get ready to go
7. drives 45 minutes into work to get there before show time
Meanwhile I got 3 hours of sleep on the jumpseat and another 2 hours in a sleep room before show. But, yeah, it's commuters who we have to watch out for...

I've seen it with same day commutes. I am on the early afternoon flight and take a nap. Then fly until midnight. The guy in flying with had to drive several hours into base which is a MUCH more exhausting activity than riding in the back.

I can only speak for FedEx, but I'm a commuter. I'm also a grown up, so I plan my commute for the trip I'm going to fly. Do you know who's more tired than I am? The guy who doesn't commute, lived in Memphis and before showing up for the trip he:
1. took his wife's car in to the shop
2. ran to see his kid play t-ball
3. after coming home, mowed the lawn because he's about to leave on a 10 day trip and it needs to get done
4. has dinner with the family
5. helps the kids with homework
6. rushed to pack his bag because it's not done yet and he has to get ready to go
7. drives 45 minutes into work to get there before show time

None of this is credible. What FedEx pilot mows his own lawn?

I assume you did not follow events after the Colgan accident. We came very close to having commuting count toward rest and duty requirements. ALPA beat that off last time. If we have another accident where poor commuting choices are a factor they won’t win that issue again.
Already enough public backlash with minor disruptions

And yes I remember 3407 very well

Just because I say that I am something doesn't mean I think that no one else is.
"I'm a pilot." Doesn't mean I think no one else is a pilot.
Nearly all of the people I fly with plan their pre-work activities whether it's at home, or commuting to arrive to work ready for their flight. Some don't. Just because some people don't manage their commutes well, doesn't mean all do. And I don't think we need to regulate commuting. We're all grown ups (better?)
I just don't like the pervasive thought that somehow commuters are more fatigued than people who live in base. I know how crazy things can get before a trip when you're trying to spend time with the family and stomp out any last minute fires before leaving. I don't believe that living in base makes you magically more rested than someone who commutes in.

Where did I pretend that no one else is?
