Nice! I do like your star idea though. Would be fun to try to find it with a telescope.

yes! You can request hemisphere, constellation etc. They provide the angle/declination, coordinates, etc of “your named star” to observe with a telescope.
I’ve also purchased for few senior USAF and foreign officers I worked with as an office retirement gift.

I suppose that could be viewed as cheesy but it went over quite well.

wow nice! Just googled it and it sounds like it’s about $50…not too bad.

If you fly to Japan or know someone who does, it is readily available there. Our guys bring that stuff back like they are working for Escobar in the 90's.

The choice of a gift depends on your intentions. If you want to make fun of him or somehow mark his retirement, you can give him a cake with an inscription or a pair of socks. But, if you want to make him feel good, give him good alcohol or a chest of drawers for model airplanes that he has already collected. I always buy a gift basket when I do not know what to give. The basket can be filled with booze, sweets, and small items. This is a universal gift because it will suit everyone unless you can exchange whiskey for champagne if you decide to give something like this to your wife.

I just retired from the AF on Monday. My squadron gave me a plaque (quite large actually) with my “rules for flying” engraved on it (I.e. if you don’t know the code in the METAR, don’t fly there). It was super thoughtful and very unique.

Glenlivet has some offerings that are not bad and priced 50$ -100$. Idk how well you know this person. But I'd be very happy if someone gifted me one.
