Obesity in this country is an epidemic and coming from a previous career in the medical field it almost always has nothing to do with physiology. Yes there are systemic issues that come into play with weight management but there are also procedures and treatments to counter those things. Pop Culture has has basically imposed an early death sentence by glorifying obesity with those who are morbidly obese. I also worked in pathology and performed many autopsies, you would be amazed at what excessive adipose tissue does to the organs, skeletal stress and vessel structure. Hearts of the obese look like marbled Ribeye’s and I’ve pulled out livers that were completed covered with veils of fat and weighing between 3000-4000 grams which is double the normal weight. I’m sorry but I’ve seen enough to say that the majority of obese folks made the choice to become that way. To demand accommodations for bad choices and then receive them only exacerbates the problem.
Obesity is one of the leading causes of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in this country. We are a nation of undisciplined fat slobs. I had an obese FO not long ago tell me that he couldn’t seem to lose weight even though he was eating less and exercising regularly. When I asked him to list everything that he ate the day prior and describe how much he exercised in a week, we basically figured out that he was eating over 4,500 calories (mostly junk food) a day and exercising consisted of walking about a mile 2-3 times a week. I then told him how I used to be obese and my doctor gave me the come to Jesus talk when my blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol numbers were out of control. The talk worked and I dropped over 50 lbs and my BP and cholesterol numbers are textbook. I cut my daily caloric intake to 2,000, eat healthy foods and not junk, and get around 4 hours of vigorous exercise per week. For all but a few people in society, obesity is preventable, but they don’t have the discipline to regulate what goes in their mouth or to get off of the couch and exercise. It’s hard to have sympathy.

Small, organized groups with narrow goals have excellent track records of winning compared to disorganized masses. Doubly so in the modern western world where victimhood is the ultimate moral ace in the hole.

Punch way above their weight, you might say.

This “campaign for seat justice” might not succeed, but I wouldn’t entirely rule it out either.

Kudos to you as your story shows weight loss and a healthy lifestyle is within reach of those who seek it. Obesity and unhealthy eating has more to do with psychological states of mind than our physiological states of body.

All anyone needs to do is watch the reality shows concerning obesity “My 600lb life” for example is an eye opener. I watched one episode where the bypass surgical candidate met the weight goal and was selected for the famous surgery. In her excitement she had the van stop at McDonald’s for 5 double cheeseburgers with fries on her way to pre admission.

Entitlement is ubiquitous in passenger aviation. EVERYONE feels like they are entitled to something. Just look at all the blogs who try to convince people how to get free perks. Everyone is just trying to leverage their cause to get the most perks. You could make an argument that even military members try to exploit their association for free perks if they can swing it.

I don't agree with her give me free seats thing but she certainly has a point that airlines have continually shrunk seats and legroom over the past 3 decades and sacrificed comfort and accommodation for some. I would support a minimum seat pitch standard.

Im with ya, it takes some sacrifice. I just made a big lifestyle change myself. I switched to light beer except for a few cheat days here and there during the week. So far haven't seen any progress so I might have to cut out the beeef jerky too 🤔

Whiskey is the low carb option., so it must be healthy 😁. In all seriousness, you have to build in cheat days or you’ll just relapse back to eating garbage and sitting on the couch. Life is too short not to enjoy an occasional bowl of ice cream.

Americans really are extremely undisciplined when it comes to weight loss. I’ve seen countless people try some kind of weight loss program, only to quit 1-2 weeks later. Then they’ll complain that they aren’t seeing any results. And the excuses they come up with as to why they stopped or won’t even start it are mind blowing. They get all motivated at first, but what they lack is discipline. Motivation might get you off the couch initially for a day or 2 to get after it, but discipline is what will carry you all the way through long term. It is really hard to have sympathy for the vast majority of obese people. They intentionally make things unnecessarily hard on themselves with minimal to no effort.

It's not as simple as "Americans are lazy.". The deck is stacked against us for healthy eating from a very young age. You're very fortunate if you are in an educated family that has time and money to make healthy choices for you from a young age. Then, you get to schools and are consistently given options that are unhealthy. Recent efforts to push healthy food options in school were repealed or hard fought.

Then you get to adulthood and know you're overweight and want to make changes. There are myriad of "nutrition" schemes looking to make a buck off of you. Everywhere you turn, you're inundated with scientifically researched ploys to get you to buy and consume... Looking at you golden arches.

Yes, there needs to be some accountability for your own personal actions but you have to overcome decades of bad habits and surround yourself with people who are just as committed as you are... AND be comfortable with doing it for a very long time to get results.
