When you're not paying 40% of your take home in student loans and driving a car bought with the career starter loan, $400 is a bit easier to come by.
But these were the same guys who could throw a pretty baller wetting down for $500 a head in a HSL squadron (10 guys putting on LT a year easy in the same month in a HSL squadron) who would then ***** that a wetting down should be the first month's pay raise, even when I got promoted to JG (was in fleet squadron as an Ensign) I did exactly that but mine was a full pig bbq and kegger at my house, cost me $1,000 and was still derided for "being lame and cheap" even though I was spending 2x what they paid each.
Well, I was the only October promotion vs 10-15 may/june between USNA, ROTC and the rando OCS/Sta-21 guy that had their promotion line up.

“Government is a gang, but not merely as meritorious as a private gang because it claims legal legitimacy. It pillages and uses violence but under the cover of law, and seeks legitimacy not through competition but through the myth of the social contract.”
― Jeffrey TuckerAnd by "racist" do you mean like the Irish gangs?

But yeah, they shouldn't complain about a free party.

they can use the money they steal from passengers to support their covfefe habit. Maybe if their staffing gets bad enough, they’ll stop harassing flight crew in some unguided idiotic attempt to protect America from people trusted to fly cruise missiles.

In my case, the Navy had a college loan repayment program that would have paid off about $75k of the $125k I owed after getting a BS in engineering, MS in Material Science and most of a PhD in Thermodynamics done.
It was supposed to be interest free forbearance for 4 years then federal student debt discharged. That would have made my student loans far more manageable around $500 a month.
I was at OCS on 9/11. Less than two weeks later they pulled a bunch of us commissioning in FY02 (I was first OCS class of FY02) and told us they were not able to keep us in the program because of congress not funding it. Since they were not holding up their end of the deal we were free to walk, no time owed, no commissioning, just sign here, DD-214 and a plane ticket home.
Smoke and bodies were still coming out of WTC and Pentagon. One guy who was a PhD from MIT was the only guy who I knew who walked. He literally would make less than his studen loan payments. Nevermind eating.
He's now a bigwig in the tech industry. Was at iRobot (roombas and such) for a long time.
But yeah. Silly me expecting the government to honor their contract.
