The "leaks" can also be designed to put pressure on the real merger target (NWA?) by suggesting that they will be left at the altar unless they say "I do" promptly.

on that note who is going to want to dance with LCC? is like the fat girl at the HS dance and no one wants to go ugly early...

I doubt a LCC would be seen as going ugly early. It however, require most companies to rethink their RJ strategy.

I bet that the first few months of 08 will be very interesting. I am sure that some will try to merge. We will see if the government will allow any of it.

by LCC I mean the "new and improved USAIR" (their new and improved ticker is LCC). But I do agree and I think is way more possible to see a Legacy absorbing an Lcc before mergers among legacies. That way the new airline can use its newly acquired Lcc assets to fight the new star ups ( virgyn,skybus,even maxjet and eos) and once those are gone, the reduction in capacity will be met with fare increases , not with extra capacity. then I can see legacy-legacy mergers.
