What about the A320? I'm planning on going 747 FE because I'll be the second youngest in my class, and if I'm going to be seatlocked for two years I would prefer the A320.

MEM is the most senior DC-9 and 320 base. If you are lookig for a warm weather base, I think you will have to wait for HNL to open back up. But, MEM will be availiable to you WAY before that.

I've heard others say that too, so you would have to use up your 1 free bid to get out of the 747? If every person who gets put into the 747 in class bids out right away, isn't that pretty tough, and expensive, for the company to handle? I mean they will never really reach their desired staffing level. Is there any way they can lock you into sitting sideways? That would suck to get stuck there if you didn't want to be there.

It is expensive and makes little sense, but they have to follow the contract and let you bid out right away if your seniority can hold it. The effect seems to be a rolling bank of reserves as the new hires cycle onto the line for a couple of months and then go back into training for their 2nd a/c, just in time for another bank of new hires to come out onto the line to take their place, etc, etc. Good news is they can't seat lock you unless they violate the contract at this point. Once you bid off the panel you will be seat locked for two years in your new a/c.
