Just my gut feeling, but I would bet that it's to try and fill up the NYC ER as there is a mass exodus at the bottom of the list every AE. Did you look at the reserve numbers for March? February was OK but now they are back to hurting again next month, and that's with 1500 hours of flying shifting to ATL.
I think that they are going to stuff it full and not put out another bid for a good whille, or if they do it will have vacancies on it that junior guys can't hold. This way the bottom can't bail out and there won't be a repeat of last summer.
Course, with the new destinations and the increase in frequecy to several destinations just announced, we may end up back there anyway.
C'mon green slip gravy train!

The only thing that's going to stop new hires from going NYC7ER (and thus bidding off it right away) is to pay what the flying should be worth (relative to domestic) so that senior guys will bid there by choice, or to stop having AE's altogether.

Not sure how that's going to be possible, since a new hire can hold anything except a 767-400, 777, and, curiously, 73N in certain bases. With the 777 growth, there are going to be vacancies in 767 and 7ER in most if not all domiciles, and many are going to be filled by new hires from NYC7ER and NYCM88, as the senior guys will be moving up to 765 and 777, as well as M88A. Sorry, but there's no provision for an "AE for everyone but the new hires."

As far as shifting pay for one category or base or type of flying, ain't gonna happen. The company already approached the union about upping the pay for FO's on the ER in NYC, (maybe 88 as well don't know about that) and the union said no way. If we're going to talk about pay increases, it will be for everybody.
