I think you totally misunderstood his/her point. To protect yourselves in case of a merger/buy-out 'swacapt' is suggesting any union might better than no union at all.

I said this before: (#70)

"I'm an outsider (big brown) and am pro-union myself however I'm not sure you can use this buyout/merger argument here. For example being part of a union didn't help the TWA pilots in the so called acquisition by AA (my TWA friends called it ‘union authorized rape’ ).
There are many other good reasons for joining a union I just don't think this is one of them. I too wish you all the best whether you decide to join a union (would be my choice) or not."

...to which 'swacapt' replied: (#78)

"Well it actually is a good reason. You may want to study the new federal law, Public Law 110-161 was enacted in December 2007 to prevent what TWA want through. It would not protect a group that was not collectively represented though, hence the reason for my post."

I think he/she makes a very valid point...

Herk, I am gonna have to second ftrplt on this one. I also thought you were against the greedy union types, but you apparently had a change of heart. I am also curious as to how you could have such a dramatic switch. JetBlue pay raise was the forum in which you were giving Greedy the third degree.

Yes, get a union and be protected (unlike TWA). Reread my post. The law was enacted in Dec, 07 to prevent a unionized pilot group from being treated like the TWA guys. If SWA acquires another airline, I would expect that there would be a negotiated integration of pilots per the new law if they are unionized, and yes, stapled to the bottom if they chose to be non union.

Swa,

Thanks for the information. I fly with guys that think we are safe without a union and that our individual contracts mean something. Unfortunately, our individual contracts go out the window if we are bought by a company whose pilots are unionized. Basically, we are out of luck and maybe on the street. Guys say a union does nothing for them but they forget that a union is better than being non union, especially if we are bought out or a new management group takes over. Protect our jobs to the best of our ability should be the name of the game, not the mentality that this company will take care of us.

Anyone who thinks that Union equals job protection should talk to all the furloughed TWA, AA and US Air guys who found a new career here at JetBlue.
Is naïveté the new normal?

Water,

Now did I say that union equals job protection? No, I did not, work on your reading comprehension skills. I said "protect our jobs to the best of our ability." I hate to break it to you but this group of pilots is going to overwhelmingly support organization no matter how much you want to spin things.

Well, is lack of attention to details the new normal too? You're repeating the same mantra however Swacapt correctly pointed out that it's exactly because of what happened at TWA, AA, US Air etc, that the new 'merger law' came into effect.

Naivete cuts both ways around this shop, bro. I hope you aren't one of the guys here who goes around here making anti-JBPA arguments based solely on your resume? It is just as fallacious as passengers who believe that safety comes solely by way of gray hair.
