ALPA - wake up and seize the opportunity

[quote=all4114all;549657]Then what is the purpose for belonging to ALPA?
There is a reason why the two most successful airlines and pilot careers are at American and Southwest, they are non ALPA.
This may have a lot more to do with business decisions made by these companies than the fact that they are not affiliated with ALPA. SWA in particular has worked hard to create a different culture for its employees that rewards effort and innovation. Things have been very positive there, even while employee groups have chosen to become unionized.
The only ones that bang the ALPA drum on this board are reps that get paid to do so.
I am pro-union, and pro-ALPA. So far, I have not held a post in ALPA, paid or otherwise.
Pilots who feel that salaried ALPA officials are overpaid should try and get one of those cake jobs. Pilots who feel that serving as an LEC or MEC unpaid member is a respite from grueling line flying should try and line up some of that soft duty for themselves. Do not sit on the sidelines, jump on that gravy train if it is so flippin' easy.

APM, feel free to post those numbers from our "volunteers" show us how they volunteer their time. Most I have seen do not spend much time on the line at all. I am not talking the ones on committees but like you said the reps. I do not consider them voulteers at all at some of the airlines.
By the way if they drop trips then they drop trips just don't keep pushing the volunteer line down our throats.

Hey Dash go back and read my post, i did not ref paid members nor did I say the job was cake. I stated about the "Volunteer" aspect and the comment about apla drops. By the way you response about jumping on the gravy train is so typical, if you don't like doing it then don't do the alpa job. As a dues paying member we can express an opninion with out being a "volunteer"

Last comment dash about paid alpa folks. The last list I saw of the pay for some of the people working at alpa in washington seemed way out of line. Yes I take issue with some secretaries that make more than pilots that I fly with. once again jmho

The numbers are provided by ALPA to the Dept. of Labor every year.
Its kind of a pain, but here's how you do it:
Go to this govt website:
Organization Query Page (ERDS)
1. Check the "union" circle
2. Next to "union name", open the pull down list and
select ALPA
3. Click the "SUBMIT" just above the ALPA window
4. Scroll to the bottom of the ALPA accounts
5. Put a check mark next to 000-179
6. Scroll down to "Reports Specific to LM-2s,
LM-3s, T-1s"
7. Fill in the dot next to: “Officer/employee
report”
8. Click “SUBMIT”
Some of the salaries and allowances are eye-opening.

His Gross Salary was 294,979
His allowances Disbursed was 169,800
Official Business Disbursement 14,915
For a total of 479,694
Now I am assuming that Allowances are for travel, suits etc, for the purpose of doing the business of the office of the President. Am I incorrect to think that?
