Why doesn't the "seniority number assigned when you get your ATP" idea have any traction?

That seems to be the most fair of all the ideas.

Lets say you get your ATP when you are 23, but then decide to become an airline executive instead. You spend the next 30 years raiding airline after airline until you have enough golden parachutes that you can retire from that immoral work. You get yourself hired at one of the airlines you didn't raid, in exchange for not screwing them. Should you come in with 30 years experience after not having flown for 30 years?

Yeah, I know. I was bored.

That's Super Premium Funny Nu! But, it's actually in line with what some on this thread are suggesting. I mean, after all, at least he was at an "airline" for all those years!

Hacker, It could actually be detrimental. I got my ATP in college at age 23, entered the Navy at 25, left active duty at 33, interviewed at SWA at 35 and was hired. If I had a "NSL" number from my ATP date, I would have been hired as a 12 year topped-out Captain. Only problem with that is that of the 3 pilots that interviewed me, the most senior had been there 10 years. So my guess is that none of the 3 would have recommended me to be hired knowing that I would be senior to them. If they hired enough 'senior' guys', they could effectively displace themselves to the right seat. How many pilots do you want hired at your airline that are senior to you?
On top of that, the company would not want me either. From a payroll (expense) point of view, why would they want to hire someone at the top of the pay scale when they could hire someone at the bottom?
I think that a NSL would make many out there unemployable. When unemployed, the prospect of starting on the bottom is better that knowing that no one would ever hire you. I waited for 2.5 years trying to get on at SWA but knew I was competitive. I don't think I would have had a chance with a NSL. It does make for an interesting hypothetical discussion though. I'm sure most of the First Officers I fly with woul be opposed to it.

are you required to have an ATP to get a job with an airline? No. I know a guy at my airline who did not get an ATP until he checked out as a captain after being here almost 17 years.

You cant even get a single seniority list at one airline (USAirways) let alone all the companies out there. What then a single contract.

Simple answer. "I got mine."

If you were at a BK carrier that shut down? Too bad.

You want to change carriers? Too bad.

It's not a profession. It's a trade. The market has always had an over-supply of pilots and is super-saturated now.

You're not hired on your experience. It plays a secondary roll to your personality. WN, B6 and NJ interviews are remarkably similar. There are tons of qualified pilots out there. HR is looking for the maliable personality. They can train everything else.

Unfortunately, I'm an @sshole with plenty of experience.

another company? You know, we do fly civilian jets, get ATPs, and soon to be retroactive (as it should be) CFII qualifications. I just don't understand this Part 121 mafia you are trying to build.

Fatty-
How can I get my CFII (per prior credit)? I am a KC-135 Instructor and former EP.

Thanks Boogie

Default Expirened Based Pay!!???

What determines expirience?
Years flying?

How about a list that gets you paid based on hours
250 hrs for commericial license
250 - 3000 Min pay $25/hour then $.03/ hour flown
(3000 hrs*.03= $90/hour)

3000-5000 Min pay $90/hr then $.025/hr flown
(5000 hrs *.025= $125/hr)

5000-10000 Min pay $125/hr then $.02/hr flown
(10000 hrs*.02= $200/hr)

10000-20000 Min pay $200/hr then $.015/hr flown
(20000 hrs *.013=$260/hr)

You top out at $260.
Need to have 2000 hrs to be a captain and get a 10% bump

Instead of pay raises based on years we get cost of living bumps.

This levels the playing field amongst the airlines. If you are a passenger you might pay to fly the airline with the expirience

These numbers are arbitrary but an example, pick your own numbers.
The guy who gave me my ATP checkride had over 66,000 hours logged and a picture of himself dropping a bomb on the battleship Yamato.
Yes that is expirience.
If you are a military guy you bring your time. Yes heavy guys get more time than fighters guys. It might create more flow between airframes.
You sacrafice a little to live the dream of flying a fighter.

Lets see I would make 5232 * .02 = 104.25/hr defaults to $125!!!
I have 17 years flying and make $60 per hour. That would be a $65/hr raise!!!. Yes I would like to get paid for expirience

Just a thought Boogie
