Default UAL/CAL history

Found this interesting tidbit while surfing today

United Airlines traces its claim to be the oldest commercial airline in the United States to the Varney Airlines air mail service of Walter Varney, who also founded Continental Airlines
So don't think of it as a merger, think of it as a homecoming

Wow, that is interesting (seriously)

But, bet you didn't know that the grandfathers of the founders of Delta and Northwest Airlines shot at each other at Gettysburg. But, they did have beers together at the 20 year reunion in 1883.

No kidding, I read it on the internet so it's gotta be true.......right??

Yea, the Varney stuff is true, but the more recent history of UAL pilots wearing buttons that say "screw Continental" back in the '80's is also true. It's going to be interesting.

If you really want to talk about the 80's, please call my father. He was a strike til the bitter end Eastern Pilot. If todays pilots had the same intestinal fortitude and principles, the industry would be dramatically different.

What do you think of Continentals impact on the industry during the 80's that reverberated for decades?

I wasn't in the industry back then but I would guess it had more to do with CALs CEO at the time(Lorenzo) than the CAL pilots.

You're right, the industry would be dramatically different. There would probably be no unions left in the airlines or they would be dramatically weaker. Not to denigrate your father's accomplishments, career, or backbone, but the law and the times are stacked against us. Under today's rules and government, any major pilot's strike would be deemed illegal. That could lead to crushing fines and dissolution of the union.

The work rules and benefits we enjoy today are a direct result of men like your father and I salute him and all his contemporaries. Unfortunately, in today's environment, history can not repeat itself.

Actually I thing it was about the hub in Denver and the fight for it. CAL/UAL has a checked past but have come together in recent years.

Barf...10 pilots in a room, 11 views.

We need to start considering differences. Things like sick leave use policy, which vacation pay formula or bid system will be used. There are hundreds of concerns and you people (who weren't there) are worried about what someone's father did 30 years ago? To move forward we need to look forward.

and another thing...

I have heard and read many UAL pilots state that they want better (in fact CAL's) mgt. Be careful what you ask for. In my view, one of the reasons things have been so bad at UAL since 9/11 is that CAL mgt has proven to be a huge cost advantage competitor. They've done this by taking from labor, especially pilots. UAL mgt just wasn't as adept at getting more for less from pilots. It's very early in the game, but if we dont hang together, we will for sure hang seperately.
