737 Type / Problems getting interview
#11
If you have any periods of unemployment..Say that you got the type through a State paid program called "Continuing Education" to help increase your market value and the 737 was the "Cheapest" Type Rating to acquire.

Go buy a type to get a job and you are just a bad as one of the PFT people that goes to Gulfstream. The same PFT people that everyone on these boards *****es about!
Granted SWA pays a lot more, and is a great job, and there is hardly anyone that will argue that.
If everyone stopped buying their own types, the they would have to hire people that didn't already have one.
PILOTS MUST STOP BUYING JOBS. PFT sucks, and we deserve better.
or
Maybe people who go buy themselves a job at Gulfstream are not all the bad like everyone thinks.
Why is it okay to but a type to get a job at SWA, but not okay to buy a job at Gulfstream?
Sorry I did not mean to hijack the thread. Just seemed like something needed to be said.

For the record, (after CFI/II/MEI) I have never bought time other than to just go enjoy the occasonal c-150 heavy!

It's kinda short sighted of them. Would they expect that you only want to work for them and no one else in the world? I'd expect you do everything you could to get hired by everyone. Screw Trashcan. Screw Southworst for requiring a 737 type too.

So Southwest wants you to have a type rating within 6 months of getting hired, yet you go to Southwest with it already because you don't want to worry about it after you get hired and they don't hire you because you have a 737 type with no experience. How are you supposed to get experience when no one will hire you? That ****es me off

The way I understand it (I'm a legacy pilot) is that unlike Gulfstream who is trying to offset training cost, SWA doesn't care were you get the type. SWA makes their newhires go through the same length training program as every other B737 operator in the country. The B737 type rating requirement is probably used to show SWA that you are trainable more than anything.
I believe that SWA used the type rating requirements in the past to gauge interest in the airline so as to weed out whiners. Now, it is just simply a requirement. Gulfstream on the other hand is just looking for a warm body to help raise the gear.

No, but I have heard that they are that way. Really I'm not interested in Airtran anyway. Southwest is the only place I'm interested in. Just waiting for the phone to ring and hoping that I'm one of the lucky few that gets in on the first interview. If I'm not, then I'll just come back a year later and hope for the best again...
However, I do agree with a couple of the sentiments here. I really don't see how they (Airtran, Alaska, Frontier, JetBlue) should care one way or another. Plus, if you pay your employees well - treat them well, you won't have to worry about them leaving.
