737 Type / Problems getting interview
Ok, I have my 737 type.....I got turned down by SWA and am still looking to get hired somewhere else. SWA was never my 1st choice but I got the type because I thought it would make me more competitive elsewhere as well as SWA....anyways, I was at a job fair this past weekend and was told by a recruiter that having the 737 type is actually a bad thing. Apparantly at this particular carrier...they have hired people with the type to have those people leave 6 months later for SWA. Has anyone who has RECENTLY been looking for that next step in their career been running into this problem? I thought having the type would help, not hurt

That's the problem with the type, and that is why it will be my last resort...
Any carrier who sees a 73 type with NO operational time assumes:
1) SWA was your first choice, and you wanted it bad enough to spend $8K for a 2 in 18 shot.
2) SWA already denied you...why should they hire you?
3) Since #1 applies, they assume that you will still try to get over to SWA as soon as you can.
Your challenge is to come up with a suitable explanation for that rating. I can't think of one myself. Maybe get a side-job at some FBN cargo op to log a few 73 hours?

Here's a good reason. I have a family to worry about and if getting my Type Rating helps me get a job than I am going to get it. I hope companies are not naive enough to think that pilots are applying to just one airline. Is it bad to not hedge my bets and allow myself multiple doors?

Don't tell them that you have the type rating. I don't think it is a crime or immoral to understate your qualifications.
As a last resort you can always go to the FAA and request that it be removed from your license.

I could see the problems associated with this (type in 737). Airtran would not like it. Most other airlines may not care, unless you have actual experience flying the plane. CAL should like it. Anyone can get a type, all it takes is money. It should help. You took the time and initiative to better yourself, learn aircraft systems and spent time flying the simulator and learning the aircraft. It should be worth something, but in reality, it may not help. It's on your certificate, so you can't really hide it. You don't have to put it on your resume though. If they ask why, just tell them you didn't put it on your resume because you've never flown it, so it's not "experience". ???

I have a 737 Type and I talked with AirTran at the last Air Inc seminar. The first thing the guy said was "I see you are trying to get hired by Southwest Airlines" and then he didn't care what I said after that.
