Delta getting close to fleet renewal order
#121
I agree Bar. Its partly why I don't care about aircraft orders. It means nothing. We're not growing, this is the new capacity control airline industry, any order will be the replacement of something. The only order I'd get excited about would be on the low end because that's movement in a positive growth direction.

Saw that one with Compass - also packaged and delivered with endorsements by the NWA MEC. I remember all sorts of nice Power Points on how it would feed mainline and would result in no parking of mainline acft.
The parking of DC9's began no sooner than the ink was dry on the TA, as did the ALPA claims of we didn't think they'd do that, plus the discovery that the much heralded NB floor that was supposedly a protection had a loophole you could drive a truck through.
Lessons of history.......

Don't forget ALPA's definition of an RJ in NWA's contract...a jet airplane with 50 seats or more, and when NWA took 6 seats out to get unlimited RJ's..ALPA's response "we didn't think they would do that"

Or sometimes simply overtaken by events.
What happened to part of our scope that said that Compass could NOT be sold unless there was at least 10 DC-9 replacements on the property.
Guess DALPA & Co didn't think that was important enough to keep.

Prediction:
1) Aircraft order of 100 airplanes before Thanksgiving including the A350 to replace aging 76s.
2) Delta 2004 reinstated payrates agreed upon by next summer.
3) Close to 200 guys take the early retirement.

Compass should have never been set up off the seniority list to begin with. Then it was not a matter of "importance." It was a matter of "Delta pilots don't fly small planes" and "we don't want to deal with their problems" and "outsourcing is good." The only thing important was expediency in divesting them before like minded individuals called a duck a "duck" and wanted a merger.

If we ordered 16 748s tomorrow, I'm sure there'd be 16 744s on the way out the door upon delivery.
If we ordered a fleet of A350s, a fleet of 764s will be out the door. Probably some 763s, in time A330s. The fleet will have A350s and 777s performing the same mission though.
If we order A321s, good-bye 757s.
If we order A320s, then A320s and MD88s are replaced.
Seems to me the idea is to replace, not grow. Not really excited about it but new equipment or renewal is always nice but it sucks we'd be in debt with more expensive airplanes to replace some that work fine and the efficiency break even would be years and years away.
If we however buy 717s. Buy E195s. Buy E190s. Buy C-Series. That's something to celebrate. That eats into the 76 seat market some or hopefully a lot.
You know what'd be really awesome? Buying E175s.
