Default AA Parking

Not very familiar with things at AA, but the 11 757s they are parking is interesting. They didn't seem to want to acknowledge it was even partly because of pilots bailing but the analysts pinned that factor as well as fuel and demand and maintenance issues on these older 75's. Got a buddy there who claims they are so far behind on checks on some of these jets that parking them is becoming the only option.

Take that for what it's worth. Just a pilot rumor, but I wonder about it and I wonder with a 60 day look back and the huge stock drop how many might head for the doors from here on out?

Another thing, if it's senior captains leaving mainly how does parking 757s help replace the top captains bailing?

Forgive my ignorance and correct me if I'm wrong here. Thanks. Dv

Dv, see my post above in "Latest and Greatest about American."

Approx. 100 bailing on Nov 1.

The 757s are on the way out (except for the 25 or so transatlantic ones.) They will be replaced eventually by the Airbii. Keep in mind, a great many retirements were also from the 75/76 fleet, not just the 777. So by parking 11 airplanes, which requires about 120-150 pilots, they are matching the attrition. So instead of signing a contract with the pilots, they decide to shrink the airline even more. Genius, huh? It's also their way of playing hardball with us, in the last stages of negotiations. Not that they are intimidating us - far from it.

We have about 3 or 4 parked in Roswell awaiting C-checks... why?? Well, our genius VP of Ops Bob Reding has cut maintenance to the bone, and closed our MCI maintenance base, which has created a huge backlog at the TUL maintenance base. So, these 757s have expired and are awaiting space for C-checks, which has now just been outsourced to TIMCO in Greensboro.

To recap, most of the 757s will be parked - it's prob been expedited due to the retirements. It won't affect manning at all, IMO.

Just noticed this tidbit today. At UA we were creating VP jobs in a similar fashion during our run through BK. I do hope AA is able to avoid the court and you guys are able to get a contract sooner rather than later. Hate to see other legacy carriers get ratcheted down. Hang in there!

Wonder how long they took to negotiate her package to be the Managing director of community affairs in the NE? What a title! American Airlines Appoints New Regional Managing Director, Community and State Affairs - Yahoo! Finance

When you say it wont affect manning at all you mean they will still be short staffed? I know it's a numbers game but seems to me if they keep shrinking they may not need to keep recalling. I guess with 111 retired in Sept, 124 in Oct and about 100 in Nov (hopefully), they will still be approx 200 pilots short even after the parking of the jets??

Tone, we are approx. 500-700 pilots short systemwide today.

If another 100 retire Nov 1, that number increases.

11 parked 757s = 150 pilots max. So you can see why, even if they are parked, we will still be short. That's why manning won't be affected - they are mainly parking the 757s this early due to pilot shortages. If anything, they need to bump up the recalls once the schoolhouse slots are freed up again.

Thanks for the up to date info. Intersting to see how long this 4-pilots-per-day retirement trend continues. At this rate, they would lose 1500 pilots this year alone!! . Gotta park alot of birds to make that one up!

From the article:

During her tenure, Ornst helped develop and support the City's overall aviation and helicopter policy, successfully negotiated a well-known low-cost carrier's headquarters in New York City and oversaw the transition of the Downtown Manhattan Heliport to a private operator generating revenue of $17 million over 10 years.
Ahhh!!! Where's my aluminum beanie hat?! AMR is going to buy jetblue!

Tone - It should come to a screeching halt after the Nov 1st retirements.

Will we have some retirements in the following months? Sure, but probably single digits, and maybe low single digits.

Almost everyone thinking of leaving in the next 6, 12, or 24 months is leaving right now.

With the expected Nov 1st retirements the 5 month total will be about 425(+/-). We might not hit 500 for the seniority year (July to June).

Thanks Slice. Makes sense given the market, lockin, etc. But wow, even that 425 number has caused some havoc!..

Default Story goes into mainstream media

Who'da thought over 60s would create the strongest leverage in years.

American Airlines will further trim its flying capacity this year, cutting flights and retiring 11 of its 124 Boeing 757s. The company announced the move Monday as it grapples with both an uncertain economic outlook and – perhaps more importantly, in this instance – a higher-than-expected number of pilot retirements.

On the latter point, AFP writes AA "hemorrhaged pilots in August and September, with 200 retiring -- eight times the normal level -- fueling speculation about the financial health of the company."
