My understanding of the purchase is that it isn't intended to make money. Nor is it fully intended that the product be utilized on DAL Airplanes. My take is that the purchase is intended to smooth out fuel price cavitations created by speculators. The volatility is what kills us. From a few articles I've read, it seems that Delta will be in the business of trading jet fuel and the byproduct thereof to get us fuel at lower costs from refineries serving other parts of the country.

This is really a cost savings measure.

Pretty novel idea, trade the products such as gasoline, kerosene, heating oil, etc that the refinery produces for jet fuel at airports at other locations. Could be a fantastic idea, could crash and burn.

And Delta's not financing the refining or the crude. Only getting jet fuel at resale, in the right locations.

Looks like Delta is going to try to use Domestic oil vs Imported oil.

Hate to say this about my competition... but it seems to be a pretty smart move~
If (in a few years from now) Delta is able to save 100-200 million a year versus the competition during the next down cycle, that will be huge!

There does come a point where you need to start thinking outside of the box.. and it seems as if Delta is doing just that.
Just hope that the Pilots can also see that, and can get their fair share of the pie~

If using Brent crude oil saves them 100-200 million a year I wonder what using WTI will do. It has been steady at about $15-20 spread for awhile. I wonder what they figure they save for every $10 a barrel.

I hope you are right. I heard one of the big guys talking about this and the logic is definitely compelling. Delta is the largest private purchaser of petroleum products in the world, so they ought to be able to drive the market somewhat rather than be driven by the market. Before, we had people with no particular training buying fuel all over the place. Now, we have professionally trained purchaser's working with a centrally managed fuel plan under a VP for fuel. The refinery is just the most visible part of the fuel plan. I sure hope it all works.
