So far, the main cheerleaders for this issue on this forum are 2 UAE based pilots, and a pilot who wants his ride home to be easier (also UAE based, but at least open about his motives).
I am a pilot for a US carrier, and I am all for a US pre-clearance in AUH. ALPA has once again picked a stupid thing to fight for. This is slightly worse than "stop the banks from giving Air India money for the 777!"

A Message from ALPA President Lee Moak: We Must Stand as One

Moak, not I, said this

But that would not be the case at Abu Dhabi because no U.S. airline flies there.
and

Moak, not I, said this

Let’s remind our government to support our jobs first.
Again, no US airline flies there (yet). So what jobs are "under threat" by this ? And when Moaks own airline (Delta), digests the Virgin purchase, will his tune change ?

maybe when US airlines start service to that location, and jobs are KEPT due to the popularity of the route, will his tune change ?

Good luck, maybe he should stick to flying the 767 and picking up the ATIS and stay out of international economic dicussions

Preclearance Locations - CBP.gov

in other news, NBAA is working to build partnerships with CBP versu

NBAA Partnership With CBP Pays Off for Members | Business Aviation Insider, November/December 2011 | NBAA - National Business Aviation Association

Doug Carr, NBAA vice president for safety, security & regulation, explained, “Our goal is to build relationships with agencies such as CBP so that we can be engaged during the policy development process and ensure that business aviation is well represented. When we succeed in building these relationships, NBAA can be proactive in working with agencies to develop successful policies before they are released.”
amazing how much sense that makes

compared to Moak

If the DHS succeeds, this “money talks” policy could mean that CBP facilities are established without regard for staffing at other domestic and international CBP facilities

Wow, there are some scary replies on this thread!

This program was started in 1952 to allow passengers traveling from Canada to the US to bypass major hubs like JFK or IAD and land at LGA or DCA where CBP facilities are not available. More passengers travel between LHR and the US than AUH and the US. Is there a CBP facility at LHR? I'm not against the program expanding, but it needs to make sense. If there isn't enough traffic for a US airline to justify flying nonstop to AUH, there shouldn't be a need to have a CBP facility there no matter who's paying for it.

As a resident of Dubai for the last four years I can say this city will NEVER get a CBP facility simply because of its friendly attitude towards Iran. Abu Dhabi isn't on such friendly terms with Iran and that's why there is even talk of this facility. It's strange, but welcome to the Middle East lol.

The price of the product has little to do with the service some companies provide. The last 30 years of observing some US business practices are allowing some US businesses to seek their own levels such above or in the garbage can. Its difficult to blame businesses overseas for businesses in the US not doing well. Some US businesses are not very good; one of them happens to be airline industry for a variety of reasons in which mirrors some other US businesses in general.

I suppose the ridiculous % of taxes US airlines pay and the criminal crack spread rates don't contribute at all.
