Of course, they haven't called me yet, so...?

They are calling people in your situation. Hang in there.

Not so sure about that. At WIA, MORE than one person I know was asked "WHY aren't you a check airman(airwoman)?" by multiple recruiters. Depends on which rep you talk to.

IOW, some seem to think that at 7-8 years with a company that one SHOULD be checkairman when they're not even off reserve yet.

The real question is, how competitive are you as a prospect, if you are the only one in the room without 1000 turbine PIC?

Oh, and of the hundreds of pilots I've known who got hired, only one had little to no turbine PIC, only her solo time in a T37 and T38. She was hired at American in 1986 with a total time of 750, no left seat time in anything, except a Cessna while in training. There were many guys in my Guard unit who had many thousands of hours PIC in a KC135 who were not hired, but she was a chick and it was 1986 so...
I haven't flown with a chick since 2000, or something like that. I say hire more, I am tired of smelly guys.

Don't beat yourself up. None of us know if we made the right decision until our 65th birthday. Who knows, CactAmerican might take a nosedive in five years. It's a complete crap-shoot.

It depends, who do you know? There's a crap ton of VERY experienced pilots with TPIC, sim instructor, LCA time that are STILL waiting on a call. AND they KNOW people. There's a crap ton of mil guys, with IP/StandEval/NATOPS experience STILL waiting on a call, and they KNOW people. So again, WHO do you know? As far as "in a few years" goes. Sorry, it'll be a long time before a pilot with ZERO TPIC gets the "cold call" from a legacy to interview. Even BEFORE 9/11 when the hiring was going at a rapid clip, it just wasn't happening.

PLENTY. Saw it at all the time. But there's a recurring theme here, THEY KNEW SOMEBODY!!!!!. However, in this hyper competitive environment, one is going to have to know either a HIGHLY connected somebody, or lot's and lot's of somebodies.

I know, I know......EVERYBODY has a story of "well, I know so and so, and they got hired at (insert airline here) and never upgraded!!!!" Yep, and there's more to the story, THERE ALWAYS MORE TO THE STORY.

As does FedEx. UPS did, probably safe to say that when (if) they start hiring they will again.
Perhaps the best post I've ever seen on this topic. +1

Yeahbut....how much turbine PIC time did all those smelly guys have when they got hired? And could you 'trust' them while you check your eyelids for holes?

Hey, I'd hire a swimsuit model to be my permanent F/O tomorrow, with zero turbine PIC, and then I might be able to stay awake after 15 hours up there!

But remember, no matter how hot she is, there is some guy somewhere, who is tired of her sheit!

Just because candidate "A" has 2k more PIC turbine it doesn't mean they are going to get hired over candidate "B" who only has 700hrs PIC. The interview is what the name implies. An interview. They want to meet you and see how you are. They want to make sure this candidate fits into their model of what they are looking for. Candidate "A" might have more pic but in the interview he came out as someone cocky and arrogant, candidate "B" was friendlier and more personable. Guess who got hired? If it was the way alot of you guys think it is there would be no need for interview. Just hire The candidates with the most time!!!
That being said... having more than 1000 PIC time in a regional isn't the same as a guy who doesn't have 1000 PIC but has time in an aircraft over 100k. and has done class II navigation and has more experienced flying. It all depends in what the particular airline is looking for.

Well, sort of. But your first paragraph was more accurate.

If the applicant meets the minimum qualifications, then the applicant has what the airline is looking for. That's been proven time and time again as airlines hire from a broad spectrum of areas. Then the concept of flight time no longer matters and it's all about the applicants interview performance applies.

However, for the here and now, and the foreseeable future, NEITHER of the above said candidates will even get to demonstrate that unless.............wait for it..........wait for...........wait for it.............

THEY'RE NETWORKED AND KNOW SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
