Delta is basically out from getting the 2 DAL gates due to the DOJ stance of awarding it to LCCs. Delta already does numerous flights from DFW to LGA, so what difference does DAL make. VX would be a new entrant to that market. When you say real competition what exactly would that be besides dumping capacity like UAL did at EWR in an attempt to drive out the new entrant? I guess it's only real competition if your airline affects another but not when Emirates does it to you.

Like United did out of EWR? All they did and continue to do is hurt themselves by dumping capacity. A good thing about VX operating these flights into ORD, DCA, and LGA is that they are slot restricted so SWA can't just dump capacity. Plus, VX and SW are a different brand. SW does not have a first class and caters to a different customer base than VX does. I think SW and VX would do very well out of DAL.
Plus, this is good news for you as a Delta Air Lines pilot. If Delta gets the DAL gates, they plan on running RJs with non-Delta Air Lines pilots operating on those routes. In fact Delta is already selling DAL-LGA tickets even though they have not gotten the gates. E170s/E175s.

While I don't think it would happen, price is still king and Southwest has plenty of gates in DCA, LGA and owns Midway. Your talking about an airline that has $3 billion on hand and made $750 million in profits to your "might have barely broke even last year". If they choose to hurt Virgin they could. Obviously they would rather have the gates in DAL to themselves, but Virgin wouldn't be near as bad as having the mega delta in your back yard.
The other thought is hopefully Virgin will IPO sooner than later and that will help things out as well.

Delta will eventually fly those DAL-LGA routes, plus many more, with 717's as we get more airframes. SWA will pay to modify former AT metal to compete against themselves and finally offer an alternative to the SWA cattle call out of LUV.
I LUV it...
(and yes, Shyguy..I took notice of your shot at delta pilots, but chose to ignore it. I don't know why you have such a hard-on for delta guys, but good luck working that out)

No they won't. First of all you have to get over on the DOJ who has stated only LCC can bid for those gates. IF you can do that, then you have to convince the city its a better deal to award them to Delta over SWA or VX. The hubris displayed by Delta in this instance is something else.

The problem is that SWA is still viewed as a LCC by those in the position to control those gates, and for that I tip my hat to SWA management. It still doesn't change the fact that wherever we have gone head to head, we will beat them....
