There are not enough 330s in the fleet to fly the schedule that has been loaded for them for this summer. Something is going to have to give. My guess is about 3 airplanes' worth.
Your guess is as good as mine for what that will be. 777 to TLV would be 2 airplanes and is pretty significantly needed. 330 is also overkill on some of the routes that it scheduled for. The 763 would be a good match for most CLT-Europe and some PHL-Europe routes.

PHX-This one will be interesting. The AW guys have been locked in PHX and it'll be interesting to see who will bid in and out. Still up for grabs is the relative seniority of the PHX pilots in the SLI. Short answer--not sure.
LAX-Not sure, but guessing fairly senior. Someone else will have a better answer than me.

LAX is probably the most senior LAA base. DFW used to be but the growth of Asia flying has reduced DFW's overall seniority. Additonal Asia flyingfrom from LAX should help reduce its seniority somewhat.
Large reduction in SFO manning is part of the change.

What do you guys see as PHX's future? It's wedged between LAX and DFW which obviously aren't going anywhere, but some pilots I've spoken to say it's a good overflow hub since LAX is maxed out and most likely won't be downsized.

Deltajuliet,
When I was at my interview in January the Director of Flight Operations said they intend on keeping it open for a very long time. He said Asia is the low hanging fruit they are going after and intend to use LAX and PHX since LAX is almost full already.
I'm just a FNG with zero experience but those were his words. I live in AZ so it sounds great to me.

Big problem out of PHX will be the high temperatures. That forces a reduction in CLB limited performance which reduces fuel or payload capability. That might restrict PHX to 'near' Asia cities (Tokyo, Seoul, Bejing?).
For the 777-200 PHX needs longer runways for very long haul flights. 787 in DFW appears fairly evenly split between CLB and RWY limited on a 10,600' runway up to about 95F. Above about 95F in PHX would reduce the 787-8's CLB limited performance. So news of a runway extension might be good news for potential 777-200 flying. 787 might not need the runway extension due to the CLB limit being the limiting factor.
Altitude is the killer for Jo-burg to the U.S. flights. 5000'+ kills the single engine climb limited performance which causes significant payload restrictions. It will be limited to about 465-470K lbs even in cold temperatures vs. a 502K MTOW.
Boeing performance charts show 'high engine thrust' charts. Maybe that's a solution to reduce the temperature problems in PHX and the altitude problems in Jo'Burg.

Sliceback,
All very good and valid points. I'll stick with "I'm a FNG with zero experience". I probably misunderstood the Captain. Maybe what he actually said was that yes they intend on keeping Phoenix open for a long time and in a separate breath said that their next target is Asia.
It was a 25 minute friendly discussion just before my interview so my cranium was on the interview and less about the future bases. I'll go back to coloring now.
Rule #1 "Never pass up the opportunity to shut the $@() up!"
How could I forget that as a FNG! My bad.
