You don't even have to read past the first paragraph to get the writer's bias. And yahoo finance? Really? That's right up there with Wikipedia. rotflmao

Everyone is biased ... The question is, are the statements in the article true, I.e., do some states give airlines tax breaks? If so, do they give the same tax break to ALL airlines?

The statement was that Dubai does not have O&D traffic. That is just a false statement. It has nothing to do with whether or not if it is a wise decision to vacation or work there. Probably close to 70% of the people living in Dubai are expats. That is a lot of O&D traffic in its self.
I know many that love raising their families in Dubai, even some Americans and Canadians. It is not everybody's cup of tea.

That's strange. Because I 'd say a good portion of the Americans I fly with and hang out with have no plans to leave. But I live here and work with these people,,, what would I know.
By the way, I am not a Kool-Aid drinker, it HAS gone downhill at EK since I arrived and if I came to the Middle East now Etihad would be my first choice.
But that still doesn't mean everyones making a rush for the door.

I keep hearing this "Billions of dollars in subsidies" being tossed around. Would you mind being more specific? Cash infusions? Discounted fuel?
By the way here is Emirates Fiscal Report for the last year with the Independant Auditors Report by PriceWaterhouseCoopers on page 65.
Annual Report | Facts & Figures | The Emirates Group
EK Load Factor was just shy of 80% last year with flights to the US in the mid 80's load factor with comparabily priced tickets to US Airlines. Doesn't sound like flying empty planes to me.
As far as subsidies there is some serious selective memory going on here. Just a few years ago Delta received financing from the Canadian Export Bank to buy RJ's for their regionals.
They also received 50 million in subsidies from Pennsylvania when purchasing their oil refinery.
Also money from Minnesota to expand a call center.
I could go on but I hope I have made my point.

If 10-15% of pilots at EK and 30% of EY/QR are Americans, isn't it the major airlines that are at least partly responsible for helping these so called "monsters" ?

Don't forget the D-scale RJ-scope-giveaway subsidy. For RJ pilots, Mideast airlines are a way to attain decent pay without dealing with whipsaw, scope, and the ALPA-sponsored screw-RJ-pilots mentality.

Woohoo let's go skiing in a building in Dubai. Who wants to go to the Alps or Utah or anyplace like that?

Hubs work best where there is a base of O&D traffic, but that's not the whole of the hib's traffic. EK can't exist only on DX O&D, neither can DL live off of ATL or AA of DFW traffic. But, there's enough and its "catchment" area is huge. If you're in North America and traveling to much of Africa, India, the ME and even parts of SEA, EK thru DXB is the very good option which is why it does so well. That's why they can attract so much premium travelers. The "bar car" biz lounge on the 380 typically has an amazing crowd of premium travelers.
Does the "open skies" agreement allow US carriers beyond rights?
