Default What can brown do to you?

How nice would it be not to open the money section and look for bad airline news. UPS is a logistics company whose airplanes make them tons of cash.

What can brown do to you? Seal a secure future for you and your loved ones.

I've got news for you. The airline industry as a whole is a gamble.

As far as CAL and PAX legacys definitley the best bet right now anyway but 10 years from now we are the ones struggeling more. So who knows.

With that said:

RUN TO UPS. I live closeby and it amazes me how pilots who do not live around UPS pilots think they have such a TERRIBLE LIFE. Not true.

If a UPS aircraft blows up tomorrow (God forbid) I can assure you the next day there wouldn't be any drop off in revenue.

If another PAX aircraft goes down the entire PAX side is done.

Secure your future and go UPS or FedEx. They are the only ones to consider if you get an offer from either.

I love CAL and yes at times PAX and FA interaction is nice but it would be nice to have a great company, good union, and steady unnerved revenue sources.

Default My 2 cents

I have been at UPS for 6 yrs. and I can only tell you this. They will treat you like crap, the paycheck doesn't bounce but the 3 week on, 1 week off schedules will suck the life out of you. True they don't have to furlough but they will just for the hell of it, example 2003. The company will violate your contract on a daily basis and bet that you don't have the stones to grieve it and if you do they will pay a few pennies and do it again. This company does not respect its employees at all. Sorry to be so negative, but this place is ********ing miserable.

Just the truth,
nightrider

For what it is worth.

First are you working right now as a pilot? If answer 'no' then take the CAL job intill UPS calls. I look at is as you may be in the pool for a long time. I once read some people sat for 3+ years. I hope that happens to no one who has been put in the pool in the past year. Yes, UPS is the $$$ with a very stably furture. So run to them when they call.

Second: If you are flying, then I would wait for UPS.

Third, I too am a poolie and I can't wait to get the hell of of this pool!!!

NightRider,

What keeps you there??? If I was that miserable then I would have looked to get out.

Just wondering

UPS is the way to go. But I am a purple guy myself, so I may be a little biased. Don't know what nightrider's deal is, but FedEx is an OK place to work, as I'm sure many UPS pilots will say about UPS as well. Sure things can be better, but we are sitting on the top of the pile right now...

I was also fortunate enough to get hired by American as well as FedEx...back in July 2001. I chose FedEx for many reasons...needless to say, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I called American to turn down my class date in late August 2001. My American class date would have been 17 Sept 2001...a class which was cancelled soon thereafter.

If I chose American, I would be back in the military right now, with probably absolutely no chance of ever flying for a major airline. I have a couple of friends, both hired by FedEx, and one hired by American and one by Northwest...both turned FedEx down, and went with the PAX carriers...both are furloughed and back on active duty...one is coming up on retirement...he has nooo idea what he's going to do if he can't stay in...

They were also both lucky enough to have finished training just before the ****** hit the fan, so they have recall rights.

Going with CAL now seems like a good bet...however, if and when you go to UPS, CAL won't be too happy with you taking their training dollars and leaving...but you gotta do what is best for you and your family.

Best of luck to you, and take heart in the blessing of two major airline job offers during these times...

I was hired at UPS in 95, United called 2 weeks later, one word of advice that helped me back then and applies even more today is this:

Look at the majors today (1995) the trend then was all the majors were trying to develope Southwest clones (CAL Lite, Metro-Jet, Song etc etc) which means work more less pay...Now look at cargo, FDX UPS the internnet is boomong getting bigger and bigger, everyone is buying online, Yet online purchases are still a very small percentage of overall sales, so there is gobs of room for growth. Add to this fact that the % of people who even own a computer, much less buy online is still quite small worldwide. Just imagine the growth potential!!!! and all this buying has a common denominator, it has to be delivered to your home!!!! Its a no brainer, it was for me in 95 and it still is today.
PS, I still would have gone with United if they called first, due to the crew bases as compared to UPS, but that was then today I'd be happy to commute.

The concensus seems to be overwhelmingly in favor of the UPS job, but let me ask one question...Do you cope with sleep pattern changes or loss of sleep well?

I did not, as a result I was always extremely tired the first day of a pairing. It didn't help matters that I lived in Florida and commuted to California, but even when in ONT for a few pairings (without the trip to the East Coast and back), I found it impossible to go to sleep at four in the afternoon.

When I was interviewing for the job, I was told that flying freight your entire career would reduce your life expectency by about five years. I don't know how they came up with that number, but I will say I have never felt so bad, so often, as I did when I was doing the night freight thing.

Obviously many people adapt and some even thrive in the night environment, but it is something that you must consider.

I thought I would love it (prior to getting hired), but reality was that I hated the night into day flying, and wound up resigning after 5 months...and have never regretted it.

Hope you'll think about this aspect and not just the financial side, but whatever your decision...Best of Luck.

Talking

Alot of people ask about the night flying issue. No doubt it takes a toll, but I ask what takes a higher toll on your life, night flying or the stress of the current airline business. My friends who fly pax have sold houses, moved families from high cost areas, sent their wives to work, and are still on the chopping block, most would trade with me in a second!
Its a decision You'll have to make, I know I do great if I get a 4 hour nap during the day then I sleep for an hour or 2 during the sort. I'm a little tired but most of the time I'm fine. I also work out alot and am in good shape, and that may help.
Rise to the occasion! Some guys are affected by things more than others, and some are a little "soft" and always need to have everything just "right" and when it is'nt, it affects them adversely. I see guys at UPS when they go to sleep take off most of their uniform, shoes etc, carry a pillow around, but earplugs in and one of those masks just to nap for 2 hours. Give me a break, their Moms must have had to tuck them into bed each night! others just lay on a lazyboy and rack out! Just glad those soldiers on Iwo Jima and Normandy did'nt mind the bullets, cold water, and general unpleasant surroundings way back in 44 and 45!! Be a soldier!!! toughen up! all kidding aside The night flying has definate pro's and cons..I more worried about ultra-violet radiation flying during the day!!
