What's the deal on Guard?
#51
Who cares if he has 20 more years in the 121 business? Nobody is enticing a "lecture" but if you ignore stupid actions, and people who act like children see that their actions don't get a snicker, they stop.
Who cares if you're on probation? You think you're gonna get called into the chief pilot's office and get fired for not laughing at "GUARRRRDDDDDD" comments by captains?

And if you think I'm going to lecture a guy with 20 more years in the 121 business than me on proper Guard etiquette after the fact in the middle of a trip you'd be wrong. If you think he'd actually change his tune after said lecture from a punk on probation you'd also likely be wrong.
When he berates a F/A over her uniform?
When he violates sterile cockpit?
When he busts an altitude?
Or just before he flies you into the ground?
You may be on probation, but YOU have an equal responsibility to yourself, the crew, your passengers and your employer to maintain a professional flight deck. I'd venture to guess that if the two of you had to visit the CP's office, you'd walk and he'd dance.

Easy Packrat, I may be junior at my CO but I've got plenty of experience with professionalism and CRM which is why I have a nice pension already without a blot whatsoever on my professional record. My CA was actually a pretty good one for the most part, the only one I've flown with who went up to check for any jumpseaters at the gate on each and every leg. He made a minor error to start that chain and I'd like to think he learned his lesson, esp as fear of embarrassment is the greatest of pilot motivators. All the other folks who jumped on after he did had zero valid reason to do so, but I wasn't about to lecture them over Guard the way some folks do (hence why I made my point here). I tried to keep my cautionary little tale here short and to the point (I wasn't actually drinking anything), but I guess no good deed goes unpunished. One reason I'm looking forward to upgrading to CA ASAP is so that I can set a better example than I've sometimes seen, heard... or read.

As you notice, it's the way it works here. Certain folks like to immediately classify you with their personal bias and make sure you get pigeon holed right away so they feel comfortable with themselves. You learn to ignore that silliness fast or move to better better waters.

RhinoPherret - Too true, thanks. I also think some guys just can't help but try to get in the last word, as if that makes them right. I try not to start or get involved in spear chucking on these forums, but sometimes trouble finds me.

From: DOWNGRADE COMPLETE: Thanks Gary. Thanks SWAPA.
At what point would you act like a professional crew member who practices good CRM?
When he berates a F/A over her uniform?
When he violates sterile cockpit?
When he busts an altitude?
Or just before he flies you into the ground?

Not to defend anything on guard that isn't appropriate, but if you have a boat and monitor 16 (USCG guard) you will hear radio abuse on a continuous basis that is beyond sad. Boater's (have a community) that is so unprofessional and unaware of what the radio is for as to make monitoring the emergency channel almost impossible on the weekends in the summer.
