Go to a job fair, have a friend over at SWA (or another major) walk your resume in, get in interview shape, get a degree if you don't have one. 12 years & 9000 TT and you are going to PSA? Nothing against PSA. SWA is hiring 800 pilots this year and 1000 next. Delta, United and American are all hiring similar numbers. All of the pilots with a degree are going to be sucked out of the regionals.

Same here.
After flying at a few other regionals, this was by far the worst I've seen. It wasn't even close.
Food-stamp wages, no duty-rigs, completely non-productive schedules, PBS, months on reserve yet I can count on one hand how many times I WASN'T on airport standby. Twice I called crew scheduling to call in sick - and I was told, "no, sorry - you can't." Same when I called in fatigued - second time in my career I fatigued-out, and was told BY A SUPERVISOR that I wasn't allowed to. Never mind that we lose the pay if we fatigue-out. Hotels were the worst I've ever seen. A few of them actually asked the crew for our credit card numbers - telling us that their manager requested this since apparently JO doesn't pay his crew hotel bills.
Lots of good people there trying to make it better, but with JO at the helm I just don't see it changing for the better.
Sully referring to Mesa as a 'bottom feeder' the other day was probably the most accurate description of this company that I've ever heard.

I have been at Mesa for a few years now. I have called out sick and fatigued. Not once was I questioned by crew tracking. I have been asked for a credit card at a hotel one time. The reason that happened was the entire crew was changed to another hotel that we normally did not use. This particular hotel was not on our contract list. The stay itself was put on a credit card provided by the company. I was asked for my personal credit card to cover any incidentals that I might accrue during my stay. I politely declined to provide a card. The hotel did not insist and let it go.
I was there, and can tell you that what I described above - actually happened. I'm sure it didn't happen to everybody, but I know I wasn't the only person who experienced this.
And before you make the (false) assumption that I must've been a head-case/attitude problem/ungrateful jackass, let me assure you that I got along just fine with the Asst. Chief Pilot at my base.
As well as the Chief Pilot.
(Okay - maybe I was an ungrateful jackass . . . but that's beside the point)
Never had a problem with anyone in mgmt whom I came in contact with. In fact, I spoke privately with a few of them about how far behind Mesa is compared to the other regionals. They didn't disagree - although for them this is their one-and-only airline. It's hard to compare when you haven't been around the territory - and lived to tell about it.
We can differ in our opinion - that's fine. But please don't imply that I'm lying . . . or even embellishing any of this. There's a reason Mesa has the reputation that it does. I have my theory as to why it has been allowed to continue . . . but that's all it is - a theory

Today an email was sent out by the IAH assistant chief pilot saying there was a large number of pilots calling in sick today. He went on to say that if anyone has an interview at another airline to please just ask for a personal day. Management at regionals know that most of the pilots there are looking for other jobs. It is just a part of the industry.
I had one of our captains in my Jumpseat a few months ago telling me he was going to call out sick on the trip before his vacation so he could have a longer time off. To me it is sick calls like that making things harder for people calling in when they are actually sick.
I am not saying you do anything like the things I have just mentioned. I am just venting. And guess what, it was your post that started my vicious release. LOL

Callsign Giant.... Interviews this week... A ( Aircraft ) C ( Crew ) M (Maintenance ) I ( Insurance )
you don't want to be in an interview and have the HR or Chief pilot ask you "so did you call out sick for this interview" Chances are if they are asking they already know the answer... Not a good way to start off with a possible new employer.....

I never said you were lying. All I know is that I have never had any issues like that. I am the type of person that will only call in sick if I am actually sick. I see so many people calling in sick for any reason what so ever. Not because they are sick, but they just do not want to go to work for what ever reason.

On a very general level, I agree with you regarding abusing sick calls. That said, Mesa tends to get what they pay for. The other side of the coin is, "if you want pilots to act professional, try treating them like professional."
I think we can agree that the executive level management at this company has no intention of 'walking-the-walk' on this issue. For those of us who adhere to personal responsibility and don't abuse sick time, we get treated the same as those who don't. Yes, I realize the latest incentive program was meant to lower the high volume of sick calls - but that's not enough.
There was a time - not to long ago - when one had to toe the company line, not call in sick, upgrade . . . and generally be a good citizen. The payoff, assuming you wanted it, was to eventually be chosen to fly for a much better company - at a much higher pay rate.
Now, these same 'higher paying' companies are picking from the back of the line, choosing pilots who have very little relative experience . . . but have a college degree (probably in Liberal Arts). It's hard to know exactly what the rules are now . . . or even more importantly, what they'll be in the next 5-10 years.
I guess we'll find out soon enough
