Always been that way, everyone who took the job at Mesa knew what they signed up for. Only difference now is that the pilot party is over, the music has stopped and the current environment is undoubtedly a wake up call for all the fresh pilots just coming out of flight school. This is the ugly other side of the aviation industry coin.
I've said it before. I don't have any ill will towards my friends at Mesa but it has always been a scumbag run company. Unfortunately everyone will again see how MAG operates (pretty much the entire regional model actually, but just in varying degrees) when we're no longer in a "pilots market".

People love to trash Mesa. I ride the jumpseat of several different regionals on my commute, and they all do the same job, at the same level. Their pay rates are lower than most, but not by some earth shattering amount. Would it be better to work for Expressjet or Air Wisconsin with what is going on now? When the company says that your entire fleet is going to be a thing of the past, that sounds like a pretty bad spot to be in. Unless there is a rapid V shaped recovery, operators of 50 seat aircraft will be shut down while Mesa survives. When considering where we are now in this industry, there are much bigger downsides than working for Mesa.

Per contract they’re only required to have 17% of the reserves that month to be on long call, so you don’t have the seniority for it maybe? Unfortunate situation and like I’ve been telling friends the only bad part about this entire situation is with the reserve guys cause they won’t be used as much and that brings up alllll sorts of unfavorable situations. I get where you’re coming from though, it’d be nice to have it that way but doesn’t seem doable

So after having a line for a couple of months as an FO in IAH, I’m now back on reserve. I commute from Louisiana.
So that means spending 19 days a month in a crash pad with 20 or more other guys from all over the country. That doesn’t sound very safe to me. No way to maintain “social distancing” in those conditions. It’s damn near asking to get the virus. Then I’m out for at least 2 weeks.
I can drive to IAH in less than 4 hours. Why can’t I be assigned long call reserve instead of 2 hour short call to avoid being exposed to those conditions in a crash pad?
ExpressJet assigned all commuters long call reserve and pilots that live in the Houston area short call reserve. Sounds like a great solution.
Why can’t we do this?

Yeah, people love to trash Mesa, for good reason. Their pay falls far shorter than other regionals and their work rules absolutely suck. And they've always sought pilots who couldn't make it at other places. Any connection there? That said, lots of great guys/gals there who picked it for a good reason and may be stuck for a while now. And as far as where the industry is now, when the recovery is complete, it will still be the same Mesa with the same issues.

The union could negotiate a MOU to allow it but there’s no easy facility to decide who wants it and who doesn’t. Oh wait. We do. You bid for it. So if you want it then bid for it.

I have an idea.... if you are so worried about getting sick... get a hotel with your bonus money. If you don’t want to do that drive in every morning and sleep in your car, then drive home. Get a cheap month to month apartment, and sleep in it. You have tons of options.
