Mesa has a special knack for taking something we used to look up in the sky and say I want to do that one day. Then u spend thousands of dollars and years to accomplish.... Then Mesa takes a big steamy pile of crap right on it!!!

Instead of providing a good environment to work in where people WANT to stay and work they force u like a prison work detail to “do the job or face the consequences”.....
I’m personally on the way out as fast as I can!!

There is a good explanation on the ALPA website if you go read it carefully and slowly. It is about as dry as the CFM but it does explain things.
Here is my understanding:
1. There is pairings to be flown in priority order based on the partner.
2. There is a minimum base of reserve pilots desired. So, they load up the remaining pilots’ schedule to make room for reserves.
3. Unstacking will place pairings on your schedule respecting your ELSE START NEXT parameters and Part 117 maximums. It tries to fulfill from the priority pairings using your preferences.
4. Unless you are willing to ELSE START NEXT into reserve, you schedule is just going to be loaded up.
5. Reserve day assignments can be unstacked as well.

Easy example: everyone bids Christmas off. Christmas is one of the peak flying times of the year, and they need more pilots than average. As a result, lots of (junior) pilots end up flying over or near Christmas even though they bid not to.
It’s called unstacking because in the grid view of pairings that need to be covered, there is a big vertical “stack” of trips over Christmas.

My flying is reduced for January. Is this just the start of the slow travel season. I went from a 95 hour line to 80.

The peaks are where you'd expect: Christmas-New Year's, spring break, summer, and Thanksgiving. Right now, in PBS Awards you'll see tons of flying at the very start of January since people want to fly at the tail end of New Year's. That's where people got unstacked in January and where there's lots of open time. My guess is you have a trip or two at the start of the month, then it reduces the 2nd half of the month.
This link is also helpful for guesstimating how much flying there is the following month and determining if you'll get a line/what kind of line. MagPBS puts it out during each PBS window.
