Thumbs up TOGA Runway Updating

Runway Updating CFM 9.79

(a) RNAV requires that the FMS position be updated just prior to takeoff. As long as the GPS is operational, this position updating takes place automatically. In the event the GPS is inoperative, the pilot can accomplish this by pushing the TOGA button located on the thrust levers. This updates the aircraft's position to the coor-dinates of the departure runway threshold. When the position update is complete, the annunciation “COMPLETED” shows above the RWY UPDATE on the CDU. Runway updating should occur within 1,000 feet of the departure end of the run-way to be used.

Did something change in the CRJ? Back when I was on it, it just had to be within 1000 feet. Checked my old manual and it says the same thing as the post above this.

So where did the "Hitting toga before lined up on the end of the runway tells the plane you are on runway heading at the end of the runway. You are neither" come from referenced on the previous page? Was that a thing at Mesa (either an actual thing or just bad gouge?)? I was just curious if something had changed with the plane/software, since, as far back as I can remember, it just had to be done within 1000'. If that's the case and nothing's changed, why would an email come out about it? Sorry, just curious as I was bored and perusing the mesa threads.

I'm curious when you hit 1000, are we forced to upgrade on ejet side?

No - there are no forced upgrades at Mesa.

There is another 170/175 operator who pushes the TOGA button before they push back from the gate. Why are ya'll freaking out about when you push it?

In the CRJ with the GPS Inop the email we received said:

TOGA must be selected when on the runway aligned with runway heading to update the aircraft position prior to takeoff.

Whethere it's TRUE or not is another thing but this is the exact guidance we were given and it certainly can't hurt to do it this way.
