Indeed. THere are ways to mitigate the BS as a TR though. Min running, and I mean ARC no-kidding legally-defined shoeclerk reservist weekend drill commercials "min running", is an option for the TR in ways an AD component guy simply doesn't have at his/her disposal. So you go take a little sabbatical, burn only UTAs, and it's a good year. If you can't stay qualified on that min run is not on you. By the time they get around to admonish ya, it's november 1st, and you go back to model Citizen Airman. Not advocating anybody play hardball with their unit, but like you said, take care of número uno, and I don't mean flight lead....

Unfortunately the guard and reserve is short pilots too. After 9/11 and until recently guard/reserve units were chock full of O-4s serving their max 24 years and O-5s serving 26 years+. Most of these guys/gals were airline furloughed after 9/11 and they hung onto their guard/reserve safety blanket. Well, all of those folks have or are retiring. The next generation, guys like me; we left active duty and got an airline job, we have never been furloughed and we are not staying in the guard/reserve one second past 20 years.

Also, many flying units are losing or have lost their ARTs to the airlines and I hear many units can't fill open AGR slots. So many dudes/dudettes are completely sick of Big Blue, they dont want full-time guard/reserve jobs. Heck, I know 5 part-time AFRC pilots (I am one) that recently quit their flying jobs for non-flying 2-day a month jobs or Academy Liaison Officer or Civil Air Patrol jobs. Even as part-timers flying 4 to 6 days a month, we are tired of the Air Force B.S. I also know 2 active-duty IPs that just got hired by the airlines and they want nothing to do with the guard/reserve. Once airline/FedEx/UPS pilots hit second year pay, the guard/reserve becomes a pay-cut and with that pay-cut, the B.S. tolerance drops immensely.

So, increasing guard/reserve utilization will not work.

Second year pay at UPS on Sept 1 2020 will be $191.00. 81 hours month guarantee. Do the math. Why would guys stay unless you just like having your whole worth as a pilot and officer based on the size of your waist. The Air Force generals are a bunch of Dumb Dumbs. Don't feed the Dumb Dumbs by wasting your time in the reserves. I spent over 25 years in the reserves and its just not worth it fellas.

AFRC 2017 Loss Management Procedure was signed on 3 Apr. All the same rules as last year. Can't seem to upload it for some reason

That means a TR pilot can't leave their position until after the fiscal year? can a TR still transfer to an IMA position? I thought the last one was you just cant go to a Cat E position, but not sure.

Damn, I would think guys would want the security blanket incase a 9/11 times a million or economic downturn happens. If furloughed, it would be nice to have a flying job to fall back on..

For me, last year, it meant I couldn't go to a Cat E program until 1 Nov last year. I heard it was also successful in stopping guys from quitting or retiring altogether until that date hit but I'm not sure about this year.

A lot of the ARC guys are barely hanging on as it is now. If you start utilizing us more, you'll only drive more guys out. Before you start using the ARC more, they need to start cutting BS deployments. You have Guard fighter squadrons "deploying" to do NOTHING. Dudes are tired of being away from their families to NOT do what they've been trained to do. It's made worse by the fact that most of us take a giant pay cut to go on orders/deploy. I've seen a decent amount of dudes bail for heavies, UAVs, non-flying gigs, or just get out.

I love this thread. Spade callers one and all! It's nice(I mean sad really) to know that all this madness I see in the Army is going on in the AF too. The Army could stop alienating their pilots for FREE, but instead their planned solution is just to increase the throughput of initial training at Ft Rucker. "Nothing to see here folks! move along. No pilot shortage here!" Said General Peterson before the Armed services Committee a couple weeks ago. He said the will 'consider' a bonus for IPs and MTPs next year. Pro tip for you, Sir: It's not the money.
