Default Time Building

I will be retiring from the Navy in about 18 months with 2000TT most of it in the H-60 and about 500 hrs in the King Air 200. Seeking advice if I should build time for the Majors through contracting jobs (ISR) where the pay is better or through regionals where I'll gain 121 experience? Thanks for the advice.

Regionals are paying $60-75k a year first year. That's likely all the time you'll need. I wouldn't do ISR, I spent enough time in the sandbox. Ymmv. A jet type and checking the 121 square probably scores an app hire than contract prop time. And you'll learn a lot more that is relevant to your future job.

Understand that what you're asking is an extremely personal issue:

- where you live vs regional domiciles
- financial situation
- family situation, etc - the list goes on and on

From a purely objective perspective, with your goal of 121, I would vote 121 hands down. Train for goal. From a personal perspective, after spending 1/2 of my 30s in that part of the world, you'd have to pay me north of senior mainline WB CA to even consider going back voluntarily. Good luck!!

I would tighten the belt now and save as much cash as you can over the next 15-18 months. Start at a regional with a big bonus on Day 1 of transition leave. How much of your Kingair time is TPIC? Have you taken CTP course?

Take all the military transition courses asap so you don't have to worry about them.

Envoy has a rotary transition program as well that you might investigate.

This! The lure of contractor gigs and their money is understandable...but who the heck wants to go back over there and spend even more time away from home. Your time, coupled with some regional 121 time will most likely get you called quicker.

Contract is more King Air time.

121 fills the 121 box, 121 training exposure, civilian passenger ops, high density ops, and gets you a jet type rating and experience.

IMO the experience/professional development answer is obvious. Your FW experience is low. Expand it vs. doing more of the same.

I'm in a similar boat to you and leaning to the Regional. First, they'll pay for your training so you're not burning through GI Bill or cash you need to pad he job transition. Second, pay isn't that bad supplemented with the Retirement check. Recommend you look at Regionals that have junior bases in places you want/can stand to live in.
