Why not doing UPT in some friendly Arab country (Saudi Arabia)....they will not be in danger and may not have the problem of the AWOL.

"Friendly Arab Country" now there's a contradiction in terms. You might recall Saudi Arabia kicked us out (yeah I know we still have some stuff there, but 99% is gone).

More to the point, I think the idea is to stand up their military as a self sufficient force which by definition would mean they'd have to be in their out country.

Plus, any arab country safe enough to host such a base is still a damn sight better than Iraq so I don't think it would solve the AWOL/desertion rate much.

As a former FAIP, I never thought I'd see the day we would need body armor, a survival vest, and firearms while teaching TP stalls and slow flight! And you're in a C172 to boot! Awesome!

I've seen alot of dumb things in my 12 years in the AF, but this one takes the cake. I'm the first guy to stand up, salute smartly, say "yes, sir" and support the leadership when I think there's a good reason, and even sometimes when I don't. But stuff like this makes it pretty hard to do. Moseley is an idiot. He's in charge, time for him to go. This, along with his stupid .357 comment, and the new service dress uniform is more than enough reason to fire his "chunk from goonies" a**.

I don't know, calling something the dumbest ever is pretty bold. If I weren't married with two little kids, I'd probably be inclined to do it. Well, other than the fact that I'd be taking a step down in job position.

What's "chunk form goonies" mean?

I do have to say the .357 remark was an odd one.

Just implying that Mosely looks a little bit like "Chunk" FROM (not form) the movie "the Goonies". I will also caveat that his looks have nothing to do with his job performance and my potshot at his features was a bit sophomoric. If you're older than 40 or younger than 27, you may have never seen the movie. And, certainly no offense intended, have you been to Iraq? I've been three times, albeit for the short AF type tours, and only one of them was based inside Iraq, but I wouldn't want to fly C-172's for 365 days there. Not to mention the whole fact that if we are willing to fly Cessna's at 1000' AGL in country then EVERY SINGLE force protection argument the AF has put forth the past couple of years is totally invalidated. Can you imagine getting HFP for flying a cessna around the VFR pattern? Amazing.

Yeah I re-read what I wrote and realized I'd mistyped. Saw the movie but don't remember it, just barely fit in the range you've mentioned. And yes, sadly I've been to Iraq, I spent six months last year there with the Army, good times (okay I spent two months of that in Kuwait but I'm hardly arguing your point). In a few short weeks I'm heading back to an assignment where I get to play pilot again and I couldn't be happier about it. And no I certainly wouldn't want to spend a year there, no matter what the job.

It's funny, I've been thinking about it since I last wrote, I came in the AF just in time to witness the McPeak uniform debacle. It's funny how no matter what he did he's pretty much associated with the airline pilot uniform. I never made the connection till now but you're right. The uniform he's proposing is idiotic, no doubt about it. And if it comes to being it will define his tenure more than anything else he may do, good or bad.
