Yes - it's buried in the language of the rule. NVGs are widely used in civil rotary ops these days and they have a recency of experience requirement, along with a way to get trained and recurrent (ie - instructor).

A skim of the NPRM final rule and search for NVG will show 119 references. It appears you just document via military training (ie - Form 8 or other), but I was just curious if anyone has done it...

EDIT: It's buried in CFR 61.31 and sprinkled liberally. It appears to be a one-time endorsement on your CFI...

(k) Training for night vision goggle operations. A flight instructor may not conduct training for night vision goggle operations unless the flight instructor:

(1) Has a pilot and flight instructor certificate with the applicable category and class rating for the training;

(2) If appropriate, has a type rating on his or her pilot certificate for the aircraft;

(3) Is pilot in command qualified for night vision goggle operations, in accordance with §61.31(k);

(4) Has logged 100 night vision goggle operations as the sole manipulator of the controls;

(5) Has logged 20 night vision goggle operations as the sole manipulator of the controls in the category and class, and type of aircraft, if aircraft class and type is appropriate, that the training will be given in;

(6) Is qualified to act as pilot in command in night vision goggle operations under §61.57(f) or (g); and

(7) Has a logbook endorsement from an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector or a person who is authorized by the FAA to provide that logbook endorsement that states the flight instructor is authorized to perform the night vision goggle pilot in command qualification and recent flight experience requirements under §61.31(k) and §61.57(f) and (g).

I believe that it will keep you for getting the MEI because I think that you DO have to have INSTRUCTED in a Multi-engine aircraft.
Here is the kicker though flyn - was your fleet aircraft multi-engine?
If so....I'm sure that you held instructor quals in your fleet aircrft of some sort - even if you instructed section lead or division lead for example.
I'm pretty sure that it does not required training command squadrons to count for this time.
All questions though can be answered by reading the SheppardAir website or giving their question and answer line a call.

I think another challenge for those who want to "teach their kid to fly" is going to be the SEL part. I think you need either a SEL Commercial or SE ATP to be able to instruct in a C152 despite someone like me (C130 background) being CFI/CFII/MEI...

Seems like the practical for ATP SE would be far easier than the commercial....but I'm just thinking out loud. Anyone done this??

FWIW...Thats not what I experienced. I was an Instructor/Evaluator in the C21 (LearJet 35), KC135 (military version of the B707) and the KC-10, and when I went to get my Instructor comp, they gave me the MEI/MEII. When I asked about the CFI,, she told me because I did not instruct in single engine, I would not be getting the CFI. I did say I have many hours in the Lear flying simulated single engine and 10 minutes actual single engine after an engine loss on takeoff,, she chucked and said it didnt count.
